Regulations for Examinations

The General Board give notice that, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board or other authority concerned, the regulations for certain University examinations have been amended as follows:

Archaeological and Anthropological Tripos, Parts IIa and IIb (Social Anthropology)

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 259)

With effect from 1 October 2010

The regulations have been amended to allow alternative means of assessment for certain papers in Social Anthropology for candidates for Part IIb of the Tripos.

Regulation 15.

Special subjects in Social Anthropology

S7–11.

By inserting in the final line the following sentence:

Each paper shall be of three hours’ duration, provided that the Faculty Board may announce an alternative mode of assessment for any of the special subjects which shall consist of the submission of two essays in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 19(b).

Regulation 19.

By labelling this regulation as 19(a) and by inserting a new Regulation 19(b) so as to read:

(b) The arrangements for the submission of essays by candidates for Part IIb in Social Anthropology who choose a paper from S7–11, for which the Faculty Board have announced that the examination may be by this form of assessment, shall be as follows:

Two essays shall be submitted, each not exceeding 5,000 words in length, excluding footnotes, figures, tables, appendices, and bibliography. Candidates shall be required to state in the bibliography the sources that they have used and to declare that the essay represents their own work unaided except as may be specified in the declaration. Each essay shall be typewritten, unless a candidate has obtained previous permission from the Faculty Board to present it in manuscript; essays shall be submitted to the Administration Office in the Department of Social Anthropology, one to arrive not later than the first Friday of Full Lent Term and one to arrive by the first Friday of Full Easter Term. A candidate who submits an essay after the required date may be penalized. A candidate who submits an essay or other exercise in place of the written examination may not also submit a dissertation.

The Faculty Board of Archaeology and Anthropology have confirmed that no candidate’s preparation for the examination in 2011 will be affected by this change.

Part Ia

SUPPLEMENTARY REGULATIONS

With immediate effect

The Supplementary Regulations for the Greek and Latin translation papers in Part Ia of the Tripos have been amended in order that Section (b) of Papers 1, 2, 3, and 4 and Section (d) of Paper 2 shall contain two passages of Greek or Latin in place of three.

Paper 1. Greek translation

By replacing the word ‘three’ with the word ‘two’ in the Supplementary Regulation pertaining to Section (b) of the paper.

Paper 2. Alternative Greek translation

By replacing the word ‘three’ with the word ‘two’ in the Supplementary Regulation pertaining to Sections (b) and (d) of the paper.

Paper 3. Latin translation

By replacing the word ‘three’ with the word ‘two’ in the Supplementary Regulation pertaining to Section (b) of the paper.

Paper 4. Alternative Latin translation

By replacing the word ‘three’ with the word ‘two’ in the Supplementary Regulation pertaining to Section (b) of the paper.

The Faculty Board are satisfied that no candidate’s preparation for the examination in 2011 will be affected by this change.

Computer Science Tripos

With immediate effect

The classification of Part III of the Tripos has been amended to award a Pass, Merit, or Distinction. The publication date for the announcement of the combination of papers and other exercises required for Part III has been changed to the end of the Easter Term of the previous academic year.

An amendment to the regulations for Part Ia of the Tripos has been made to reflect a change in the Natural Sciences Tripos.

Regulation 7.

By replacing in line 1 the words ‘in each Part’ by the words ‘in each of Parts Ia, Ib, and II’.

Regulation 10.

By replacing in the final line the word ‘Geology’ by the words ‘Earth Sciences’.

Regulation 19.

By replacing in the final line the words ‘not later than the division of the Michaelmas Term’ by the words ‘not later than the end of the Easter Term’.

New Regulation 20.

By inserting a new Regulation 20 so as to read:

20. The names of the candidates who obtain honours in Part III shall be arranged in alphabetical order in a single class, with distinctive marks attached to the names of those candidates who in the opinion of the Examiners deserve special credit, (d) for a distinguished performance, (m) for a meritorious performance.

With effect from 1 October 2011

The General Board have approved a proposal from the Faculty Board of Computer Science and Technology to permit students to spend their third year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology following a course which counts as Part II of the Computer Science Tripos. They will then return to take the fourth year (Part III of the Tripos) in Cambridge. A new Regulation 18 has accordingly been appended to the regulations for Part II of the Tripos so as to read:

Regulation 18.

18. A student who, under arrangements approved by the Faculty Board of Computer Science and Technology, has spent not less than three terms studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has been certified by the President of the Institute after consultation with the Chairman of Examiners for Part II of the Computer Science Tripos to have studied diligently during that period, shall be deemed thereby to have obtained honours in that Part of the Tripos. A list containing the names of persons so qualified shall be certified by the Chairman of the Faculty Board and published in the Reporter.

The current Regulations 18 and 19 and new Regulation 20 above have been renumbered accordingly.
