DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

Founded in 1800, Downing College in the University of Cambridge has a unique and magnificent setting among twenty acres of lawns and trees, yet is located close to the centre of Cambridge. The College is seeking a Development Director to manage the College’s fundraising strategy and ensure the achievement of its funding and charitable objectives, including the aim of raising £20m by 2015 for the Catalysis Endowment Campaign.

A key aspect of the Development Director’s role is asking major prospects directly for donations through face-to-face meetings, managing the College’s relationships with existing major donors and identifying and cultivating relationships with prospective donors. The role is also responsible for managing alumni relations, annual giving, and legacies, and the day-to-day supervision of the Development team of three staff.

The successful candidate will be experienced in major gift fundraising and alumni relations. He or she will possess the ability to develop and put into operation effective strategic plans and be able to demonstrate credibility, confidence, and political sensitivity, including the ability to work effectively with the Master and the College Fellowship. Experience gained within an educational environment or an understanding of the issues facing universities is desirable.
