Form and conduct of examinations, 2015

Notices by Faculty Boards, or other bodies concerned, of changes to the form and conduct of certain examinations to be held in 2015, by comparison with those examinations in 2014, are published below. Complete details of the form and conduct of all examinations are available from the Faculties or Departments concerned.

Engineering Tripos, 2015

The Faculty Board of Engineering give notice that the form of the examinations to be taken in the Easter Term 2015 shall be as follows:

All candidates will be given ten minutes’ reading time before the examination begins, except in the case of Paper 4I8 where no reading time will be permitted.

The form of the examinations for certain papers of the Engineering Tripos to be held in 2015 will be changed as follows:

Part IIa

Examination not running in 2015:

4D8

New examination for 2015:

4D16 Construction management. This is a 100% paper examination with five questions, of which three are to be attempted.

Part IIb

4C7 is no longer ‘open book’; it is a normal, closed book examination.

4M18 has an examination paper with four questions, of which three are to be attempted.

Examinations not running in 2015:

4A11, 4A15, 4D8, 4F6

New examinations for 2015:

4D16 Construction management. This is a 100% paper examination with five questions, of which three are to be attempted.

4M15 Sustainable energy. This consists of both course-work and an examination paper. The paper will consist of three questions, of which two are to be attempted.

Medical and Veterinary Sciences Tripos, 2015

Part Ia

The Faculty Board of Biology give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2015, the form of the examination for the following papers for the Medical and Veterinary Sciences Tripos Part Ia Examination will be changed as follows:

Functional architecture of the body (FAB)

The examination shall consist of:

(i)one written paper of two hours and 45 minutes duration, which shall contain compulsory short-answer questions (Section I) and essay questions (Section III); candidates will be allowed 45 minutes to complete Section I;

(ii)a practical examination of one and a half hours duration (Section II).
 

Part Ib

The Faculty Board of Biology give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2015, the form of the examination for the following papers for the Medical and Veterinary Sciences Tripos Part Ib Examination will be changed as follows:

Biology of disease (BoD) Section II (practical paper)

All questions will score equal marks. (Otherwise the form is unchanged: five questions, of which questions 2 and 3 will be in machine-markable format.)
 

Head and neck anatomy (HNA)

The examination will test knowledge and understanding of the material contained in the HNA course. The Second M.B. component (Sections I and II) will comprise a 45-minute combined MCQ/steeplechase examination which will include fifteen questions on anatomical specimens, radiological images, and clinical applications. The Tripos component will be Sections I, II, and III. Section III will comprise a 45-minute written paper where candidates will be required to answer three from six short-answer questions.
 

Neurobiology with human behaviour (NHB)

The examination will test knowledge and understanding of the material contained in the NHB course, and will be in three sections: Sections I, II, and III. Sections I and III are written papers, and Section II will be a practical paper. All three sections contribute to the Tripos mark in the proportions: Section I – 30%; Section II – 20%; and Section III – 50%.

Section I will consist of compulsory short questions and will last one and a half hours. The questions may require brief and concise answers and/or selection of the best answer from several possibilities given.

Section II will be a one-hour practical examination. Questions will examine core knowledge and understanding in any aspect of the course. The examination will consist of short questions designed to examine candidates’ understanding of functional neuroanatomy, their understanding of and ability to interpret neurophysiological data, and their understanding of human behaviour.

Section III of this examination will be a three-hour written paper. The paper will have two parts (A – Neurobiology, and B – Psychology for medicine). Candidates will be required to answer two of six possible questions from part A and one of three possible questions from part B. Each question in Section III will carry equivalent marks.
 

Neurobiology with animal behaviour (NAB)

The examination will test knowledge and understanding of the material contained in the NAB course, and will be in three sections, Sections I, II, and III. Sections I and III are written papers, Section II will be a practical paper. All three sections contribute to the Tripos mark in the proportions: Section I – 25%; Section II – 25%; and Section III – 50%.

Section I will consist of compulsory short answer questions and will last one hour. The questions may require brief and concise answers and/or selection of the best answer from several possibilities given.

Section II will be a one-hour practical examination; questions may examine core knowledge and understanding in any aspect of the course. The examination will consist of short questions designed to examine candidates’ understanding of functional neuroanatomy, and their understanding of an ability to interpret neurophysiological data.

Section III of this examination will be a two-hour written paper. Candidates will be provided with a choice of essay questions and will be required to answer two from seven possible questions. Each question in Section III will carry equivalent marks.
