Regulations for examinations

Chemical Engineering Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 294)

With effect from 5 January 2024

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology Syndicate, has approved an amendment of the regulations for the Chemical Engineering Tripos to alter the length of written examinations for Group A topics. The General Board is satisfied that no candidate’s preparation for the exam will be affected by the change.

Regulation 15(b).

By replacing the words ‘of two hours’ duration’ with ‘of one and a half hours’ duration’ in Regulation 15(b).

Human, Social and Political Sciences Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 369)

With effect from 1 October 2024

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Human, Social and Political Science, has approved the amendment of the regulations for the Human, Social and Political Sciences Tripos to prohibit a student taking Papers SOC5 and POL6 in consecutive years due to overlapping content, as follows:

Regulation 18.

By adding a footnote to the references to Paper POL6 in sub-paragraphs 18(a)(iii) (Politics and International Relations) and 18(d)(i) (Politics and Sociology) that reads ‘Paper POL6 is only available to candidates if they did not take Paper SOC5 in Part IIa’.

Law Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 379)

With effect from 1 October 2024

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Law, has approved amendments to the regulations for the Law Tripos to amend certain paper details, as follows:

Regulation 17.

By amending the title of Paper 10 in Group I from Civil law I to Civil law in context.

By amending the title of Paper 30 in Group III from Civil law II to Advanced civil law.

And by adding a footnote to Paper 42, Competition law, in Group IV to suspend it for the 2024–25 academic year.

Master of Law (LL.M.) Examination

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 466)

With effect from 1 October 2024

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Law, has approved an amendment to the regulations for the LL.M. Examination to change the title of the field Intellectual Property to Intellectual Property, Technology and Information Law to widen the field of study. The title of the field in Regulation 1 will be updated accordingly.

Cognitive Neuroscience for the M.Phil. Degree

With effect from 1 October 2024

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Clinical Medicine, has approved Cognitive Neuroscience as a course of study for the degree of Master of Philosophy by Advanced Study with effect from 1 October 2024. Special regulations for the examination have been approved as follows:

Cognitive Neuroscience

1. The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in Cognitive Neuroscience for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist of:

(a)a biostatistics assessment;

(b)a written paper of two hours’ duration;

(c)an essay of no more than 2,500 words in length comparing three contrasting research papers, on a topic chosen from a specified list;

(d)a dissertation on an individual research project, on a topic proposed by the candidate and subject to the approval of the Degree Committee for the Faculties of Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, comprising

(i)a literature review of the relevant field providing background to and context for the research project, of no more than 5,000 words in length (excluding tables, footnotes, appendices, and bibliography); and

(ii)an account of the methods and outcomes of the research project, of no more than 5,000 words in length (excluding tables, footnotes, appendices, and bibliography);

(e)a poster presentation on the research project;

(f)an oral presentation on a research technique, on a topic chosen by the candidate and subject to the approval of the Degree Committee.

2. The list of research papers available to candidates under Regulation 1(c) shall be published by the Degree Committee no later than the end of the Michaelmas Term of the academic year in which the examination is to be held.

3. The examination may include, at the discretion of the Examiners, an oral examination on the work submitted by the candidate under Regulation 1(c) to (f) and on the general field of knowledge within which such work falls.

Latin-American Studies for the M.Phil. Degree

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 528)

With effect from 1 October 2024

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Degree Committee for the Department of Politics and International Studies, has approved the amendment of the special regulations for the course in Latin-American Studies for the degree of Master of Philosophy as follows:

Regulation 1(b).

By removing the words ‘, from the following list of modules:’ and the list of named modules from the text of Regulation 1(b).

Molecular Mechanisms of Human Disease for the M.Phil. Degree

With effect from 1 October 2024

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Clinical Medicine, has approved Molecular Mechanisms of Human Disease as a course of study for the degree of Master of Philosophy by Advanced Study with effect from 1 October 2024. Special regulations for the examination have been approved as follows:

1. The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in Molecular Mechanisms of Human Disease for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist of:

(a)a biostatistics assessment;

(b)a written paper of two hours’ duration;

(c)a dissertation on an individual research project, on a topic proposed by the candidate and subject to the approval of the Degree Committee for the Faculties of Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, comprising

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Clinical Medicine, has approved Obesity, Endocrinology and Metabolism as a course of study for the degree of Master of Philosophy by Advanced Study with effect from 1 October 2024. Special regulations for the examination have been approved as follows:

Connected Electronic and Photonic Systems for the M.Res. Degree

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 544)

With effect from 1 October 2024

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Engineering, has approved a change to the title of the course of study for the degree of Master of Research in Connected Electronic and Photonic Systems to Photonic and Electronic Systems. The title of the special regulations for the course and text of Regulation 1 will be updated accordingly.

Sensor Technologies and Applications for the M.Res. Degree

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 547)

With effect from 1 October 2024

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Engineering, has approved the suspension of the course of study in Sensor Technologies and Applications for the degree of Master of Research for the 2024–25 academic year. The special regulations for the course will be footnoted accordingly.

Crime and Thriller Writing for the M.St. Degree: Correction

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 556)

With effect from 1 October 2024

The Notice published on 13 March 2024 (Reporter, 6734, 2023–24, p. 443) unfortunately contained an error. The General Board has approved the suspension of the course in Crime and Thriller Writing for the degree of Master of Studies for one year from 1 October 2024 and not its withdrawal. The special regulations will be footnoted accordingly.

Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Studies and Postgraduate Diploma in International Law

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 579)

With effect from 1 October 2024

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Law, has approved the suspension of both the Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Studies and the Postgraduate Diploma in International Law for the 2024–25 academic year. The regulations for the Postgraduate Diplomas will be footnoted accordingly.
