Form and conduct of examinations, 2018
Notices by Faculty Boards, or other bodies concerned, of changes to the form
and conduct of certain examinations to be held in the Easter Term 2018, approved
exceptionally following recent industrial action, are published below. Complete details
of the form and conduct of all examinations are available from the Faculties or
Departments concerned.
Linguistics Tripos, Part IIb
The Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages gives notice that,
exceptionally, the form of certain papers for the examinations to be held in 2018 will
be changed as follows:
Part IIb
Paper 9. – Syntax (also serves as Paper Li.9 of the Modern and Medieval Languages
Tripos)
Answer three questions.
Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos, Parts Ib and II
The Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages gives notice that,
exceptionally, the form of certain papers for the examinations to be held in 2018 will
be changed as follows:
Part Ib
Paper Fr.6. – Innovation and upheaval: deformation and reformulation in the
20th and 21st centuries (also serves as Paper 10D of Part I of the English Tripos)
Answer three questions from any section. No more than
one question may be taken from Section C.
Paper Pg.1. – Introduction to the language, literatures, and cultures of
Portuguese speaking countries (also serves as Paper 10L of Part I of the English Tripos)
Answer three questions from any section. Answers can
focus on texts from any country (Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola) and on any
material (film, literature, visual art).
Paper Pg.3. – Introduction to the language, literatures, and cultures of the
Portuguese-speaking world
Paper Pg.3C (cultural element)
Candidates will be required to answer two questions.
Answers can be drawn from any topic and deal with any
country (Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola) and any
media (literature, film, visual culture).
Paper Sl.6. – Russian culture after 1953
The questions in Section A of the exam paper will be adjusted. The existing
format of the paper is such that students are asked to answer one out of three questions
in Section A. Questions are on two set texts. These include an essay question on one set
text, a commentary on another, and a comparative essay on both set texts. The
comparative question will be loosened by making it possible to answer with respect to a
single set text.
Part II
Paper Fr.11. – Gender, desire, and power in 19th century French culture (also serves as Paper 38 of Part II of the English Tripos)
The rubric for Section A only will be adjusted to allow candidates to answer
without having to draw on the texts from the final unit of study. Candidates will be
asked to respond to a proposition with references to at least three texts
studied.
Paper Fr.14. – A special topic in French studies (A) to be specified by the Faculty Board from time to time (Theatre: theory and practice, 1600–2000)
Answer three questions, including at least
one from Section A and one from Section B.
One, and only one, of the three questions
answered must be a commentary.
Paper Ge.11. – History of the German language (also serves as Paper 22 of the Linguistics Tripos)
Answer three questions. You may answer no more than
two questions from one topic. Candidates may not answer
more than two commentary questions.
Paper IL.1. Ibero-American cinema
Answer three questions. Scripts as a whole must show
knowledge of cinema from two of the paper’s specified regions
(Europe, Latin America, Africa) and two languages (Spanish,
Portuguese, Catalan).

Answer two or three questions.
