Regulations for examinations

Classical Tripos, Part Ib

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 305)

With effect from 1 October 2015

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Classics, have approved amendments to the regulations for the Classical Tripos so as to allow fifteen minutes’ reading time for Paper 5, Greek literature (also serves as Paper GL 15 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos) and Paper 6, Latin literature (also serves as Paper GL 16 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos).

Part Ib

Regulation 17.

By amending the first sentence of the regulation so as to read:

The examination shall consist of the following papers, each to be set for three hours, except for Papers 5 and 6, which shall be of three hours and fifteen minutes’ duration (to include fifteen minutes’ reading time).

The Faculty Board of Classics are satisfied that no candidate’s preparation for the examination in 2016 will be adversely affected.

Education Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 319)

With immediate effect

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Education, have approved an amendment to Schedule 2, governing subjects and papers for Section IV of Part II of the Education Tripos so as to align them with Part II of the Music Tripos (New Regulations).

Candidates may offer one or two of the papers from among Papers 1–5 and any of the additional papers announced for the Music Tripos, with the exception of Paper 6 (instead of one or two of Papers 1; 3–6; and any of the additional papers announced for the Music Tripos). These papers cover essentially the same subject areas as those papers that were previously available; candidates for the Education Tripos were previously unable to offer Advanced tonal composition (Paper 2) and, under the New Regulations for the Music Tripos, are unable to offer Advanced tonal skills (Paper 6).

SCHEDULE 2

SUBJECTS AND PAPERS FOR SECTION IV OF PART II OF THE EDUCATION TRIPOS

Music

By amending the current entry so as to read:

Candidates may offer one or two of the following papers:

Any of Papers 1–5 of Part II of the Music Tripos, all of which shall be submitted or undertaken under the conditions specified in the regulations for the Music Tripos

Any of the additional papers from Part II of the Music Tripos announced by the Faculty Board of Music, with the exception of Paper 6, Advanced tonal skills. These papers shall be undertaken under any conditions specified by the Faculty Board of Music when they are announced

Paper Ed.A1 Arts and performance (written paper and submission of course-work)

The Faculty Board of Education are satisfied that no candidate’s preparation for the examination in 2015 will be adversely affected.

Human, Social, and Political Sciences Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 355)

With effect from 1 October 2015

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Human, Social, and Political Science, have approved an amendment to Regulation 18 to permit candidates undertaking the Politics and International Relations track the option to choose Paper 6 borrowed from Part II of the Historical Tripos.

By amending Regulation 18(c)(iii) so as to read (retaining all footnotes):

(iii) either one paper chosen from ARC8–33, BAN2–4, BAN6–9, SAN8–12, SOC6–15, or Paper 6 borrowed from Part II of the Historical Tripos, or a further paper chosen from POL10–19

Mathematical Tripos, Parts Ib and II

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 377)

With effect from 1 October 2015

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Mathematics, have approved amendments to the regulations to change the requirement for students to submit notebooks of practical work to a requirement to submit records of project work, and to replace references to the Head of Department with references to the Chair of the Faculty.

By amending Regulation 9 so as to read:

Candidates for Part Ib may submit reports containing records of project work done by them. Such project work and its examination requirements shall be prescribed from time to time by the Faculty Board of Mathematics, and shall be carried out in accordance with instructions which shall be announced not later than the division of the Michaelmas Term next preceding the examination by the Chair of the Faculty of Mathematics, or her or his duly appointed deputy. As an indication of good faith, each candidate shall submit, with the records of her or his work, a declaration that these instructions, and relevant University rules and regulations, have been observed. The Chair of the Faculty of Mathematics, or her or his duly appointed deputy, shall present an assessment of this work to the Examiners, and the Examiners shall take account of this assessment in drawing up the class-list. Candidates may be examined viva voce on their submitted work.

By amending Regulation 14 so as to read:

Candidates for Part II may submit reports containing records of project work done by them. With effect from 1 October 2015

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages, have approved amendments to the regulations for the Tripos so as to allow fifteen minutes’ reading time for Papers GL 15, Greek literature (Paper 5 of Part Ib of the Classical Tripos) and GL 16, Latin literature (Paper 6 of Part Ib of the Classical Tripos).

Regulation 7.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

7. Except as otherwise specified in Schedules A and C, the written papers in each Part shall be of three hours’ duration.

By amending the entries for the following papers so as to read:

Psychological and Behavioural Sciences Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 432)

With effect from 1 October 2015

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Biology, have approved amendments to the regulations to clarify wording, to reorder Regulations 11 and 12, to amend the titles of PBS 3 and 6, to amend the regulations regarding eligibility for Part IIb so as to allow students with another Honours Examination to take the Part, to amend titles for PBS 8–14 and add a new paper, and to change the paper requirements for Part IIb.

By amending Regulation 11 so as to delete the section in brackets in the title of PBS 1.

By renumbering Regulation 11 as 12 and Regulation 12 as 11.

By amending Regulation 16 so that the title of PBS 3 is amended so as to read ‘Social and developmental psychology’ and amending the title of PBS 6 so as to read ‘Research skills project, as prescribed in Regulation 19’.

By amending Regulation 19 by deleting ‘research project’ and replacing it with ‘project report’.

By amending Regulation 20 so as to read:

20. A student who has obtained honours in Part IIa of the Tripos or in another Honours Examination, in the year next after having done so, provided that he or she has kept seven terms and no more than twelve complete terms have passed after her or his first term of residence, may be a candidate for honours in Part IIb.

By amending the titles of PBS 8–14 and adding a new paper, PBS 15, Legal pyschology, in Regulation 21 so as to read:

22. A candidate for honours in Part IIb shall be required to offer PBS 7, the research dissertation, and three further papers, provided that no candidate shall offer more than two papers from PBS 12–14, and no more than two papers chosen from the list of Optional Papers published in accordance with Regulation 9.

Theological and Religious Studies Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 434)

With effect from 1 October 2015

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Divinity, have approved amendments to the list of papers available for examination by suspending certain papers.

Paper D2.

By removing the current title and text under (a) (Body, self, and society) and replacing it with the following:

(a) Councils in context

By removing the current title and text under (b) (Theological interpretation of the Gospel of John) and replacing it with the following:

(b) Religious experience: mesmerism, spiritualism, and psychical research

This paper will study the topic of religious experience from a social scientific perspective through texts drawn from the eighteenth century to the present. The Faculty Board may from time to time prescribe texts for special study.

Examination in European and Comparative Literatures and Cultures for the M.Phil. Degree

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 529)

With effect from 1 October 2016

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages, have approved the retitling of the above course of study for the M.Phil. Degree to European, Latin American, and Comparative Literatures and Cultures with effect from 1 October 2016. The programme specification and regulations are otherwise unchanged.

Examination in Genomic Medicine for the M.Phil. Degree

With effect from 1 October 2015

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Clinical Medicine, have approved Genomic Medicine as a subject for the M.Phil. Degree with effect from 1 October 2015. Special regulations for the examination in the subject have been approved as follows:

Genomic Medicine

1. The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in Genomic Medicine for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist of:

either

(a)(i) seven core modules, and one further module chosen from a range of optional modules to be announced by the Degree Committee for the Faculties of Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, not later than the end of the Easter Term preceding the examination;

and

(ii)a research project of between 10,000 to 12,000 words, including footnotes but excluding tables, appendices, and bibliography, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculties of Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine,

or

(b)(i) seven core modules, and three further modules chosen from a range of optional modules to be announced by the Degree Committee for the Faculties of Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, not later than the end of the Easter Term preceding the examination;

and

(ii)a literature-based research project of between 5,000 to 6,000 words, including footnotes but excluding tables, appendices, and bibliography, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculties of Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine.

2. Each module shall be examined by assignments of 2,500 to 3,500 words, or assignments deemed their equivalent by the Degree Committee, except where other methods of assessment are published in individual module descriptions.

Examination in Management Science and Operations for the M.Phil. Degree

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 535)

With effect from 1 October 2016

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Business and Management, have approved a change to the title of the subject for examination to Strategy, Marketing, and Operations, with effect from 1 October 2016. The content of, and regulations for, the degree otherwise remain unchanged.

Examination in Genomic Medicine for the M.St. Degree

With effect from 1 October 2015

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Clinical Medicine and the Strategic Committee of the Institute of Continuing Education, have approved Genomic Medicine as a subject for the Master of Studies Degree with effect from 1 October 2015. Special regulations for the examination in the subject have been approved as follows:

Genomic Medicine

1. The scheme of examination for the course of study in Genomic Medicine for the degree of Master of Studies shall consist of:

either

(a)(i) seven core modules, plus one further module chosen from a range of optional modules to be announced by the Degree Committee for the Faculties of Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, not later than the end of the Easter Term preceding the examination;

and

(ii) a research project of between 10,000 to 12,000 words, including footnotes but excluding tables, appendices, and bibliography, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculties of Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine,

or

(b)(i) seven core modules, plus three further modules chosen from a range of optional modules to be announced by the Degree Committee for the Faculties of Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, not later than the end of the Easter Term preceding the examination;

and

(ii) a literature-based research project of between 5,000 to 6,000 words, including footnotes but excluding tables, appendices, and bibliography, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculties of Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine,

2. Each module shall be examined by assignments of 2,500 to 3,500 words, or assignments deemed their equivalent by the Degree Committee, except where other methods of assessment are published in individual module descriptions.

3. The Examiners may recommend to the Degree Committee that it recommends to the Institute of Continuing Education the award of the Postgraduate Certificate to a candidate who has satisfactorily completed four core modules specified in 1(a) or 1(c), and to a candidate who has not completed, or fails to reach the required standard for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma.

4. The Examiners may recommend to the Degree Committee that it recommends to the Institute of Continuing Education the award of the Postgraduate Diploma to a candidate who has satisfactorily completed the eight modules specified in 1(a)(i), or at eight modules specified in 1(b)(i) comprising the seven core modules and one option module, and to a candidate who has not completed, or fails to reach the required standard in the research project required under 1(a)(ii) or 1(b)(ii).

Diplomas and Certificates open to non-members of the University

The scheme of examination for the Postgraduate Diploma in Genomic Medicine shall consist of seven core modules, and one further module chosen from a range of optional modules announced by the Degree Committee for the Faculties of Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine not later than the end of the Easter Term preceding the examination. Each module shall be examined by assignments of 2,500 to 3,500 words, or assignments deemed their equivalent by the Degree Committee, except where other methods of assessment are published in individual module descriptions.

Postgraduate Certificate in Genomic Medicine

1. The Postgraduate Certificate in Genomic Medicine shall be administered by the Institute of Continuing Education.

2. The scheme of examination for the Postgraduate Certificate in Genomic Medicine shall consist of four core modules. Each module shall be examined by assignments of 2,500 to 3,500 words, or assignments deemed their equivalent by the Degree Committee, except where other methods of assessment are published in individual module descriptions.

CULP Awards in French, German, Italian, and Spanish

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 593)

With immediate effect

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Committee of Management of the Language Centre, have approved changes to the scheme of assessment for the CULP Awards so as to clarify requirements in the full range of the curriculum.

By amending Regulation 2 so as to read:

2. The scheme of assessment shall be as follows: attendance 5%; participation 5%; written homework 10%; oral presentation 30%; final examination (reading/listening comprehension and writing) 50%. The final examination shall take place on the last Saturday of the course during Lent Term and will be of two hours’ duration. Full details of the expectations with regard to each element of assessment will be issued to students at the start of the course and made available on the Language Centre website.
