The benefaction, of which the capital and the income will be available, will be used to support the Winton Programme for the Physics of Sustainability, which will be focused on innovative fundamental research in physics and other associated fields designed to help meet the need for sustainable use of natural resources, including in particular energy generation and use. The Programme will run in the first instance from 2011 to 2022 and will provide: studentships, research fellowships, and support for new academic staff; investment in research infrastructure of the highest level; pump-priming for novel research projects; support for collaborations within the University and outside; and sponsorship for meetings and outreach activities.
