Graces

Graces submitted to the Regent House on 7 October 2009

The Council submits the following Graces to the Regent House. These Graces, other than any which is withdrawn or for which a ballot is requested in accordance with the regulations for Graces of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 107), will be deemed to have been approved at 4 p.m. on Friday, 16 October 2009.

1. That Regulation 3 of the regulations for the Information Strategy and Services Syndicate (ISSS) be amended in respect of the election of members in classes (e) and (f) by replacing the second and third sentences so as to read:1

Members in classes (e) and (f) shall be elected in the Michaelmas Term and shall serve for two years from 1 January following their election; the procedure for such an election shall be that prescribed in the Single Transferable Vote Regulations, except that the returning officer shall be the Chairman of the Syndicate or a deputy appointed by the Chairman.

2. That the general regulations for Examiners and Assessors (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 240) be amended as follows:2

Regulation 3.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

3. Nominations shall be made in accordance with the following timetable:

Chairmen of Examiners and Senior Examiners: not later than the first day of the Michaelmas Term in the academical year in which the examination is to be held.

Other Examiners: not later than the division of the Michaelmas Term in the academical year in which the examination is to be held.

Assessors: not later than four weeks before the beginning of the examination concerned.

Regulation 9.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

9. The duty to examine students which is imposed by Statute D, II, 4 on every University officer specified in Schedule J of the Statutes shall be restricted to the examining of candidates for any of the degrees of Master of <Advanced Study,>3 Business Administration, Engineering, Finance, Law, <Mathematics,>3 Natural Sciences, Philosophy, and Research, or Bachelor of Arts, Medicine, Music, Surgery, and Veterinary Medicine, or for any Certificate or Diploma of the University listed in the Table of Fees under University Composition Fees.

3. That the regulations for payments to Examiners and Assessors (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 241) be amended as follows:4

Regulation 4.

By inserting in line 2 after the words ‘Doctor of’ the words ‘Engineering or’.

4. That, with effect from 1 October 2009, the regulations for the dates of examinations and publication of class-lists (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 233) be amended as follows:

Monday before the first day of Full Easter Term

By inserting the Engineering Tripos, Part IIa.

First Thursday of Full Easter Term

By deleting the Engineering Tripos, Part IIa.

Wednesday before the first Sunday in June

By inserting the Engineering Tripos, Part Ia.

Monday after the first Sunday in June

By deleting the Engineering Tripos, Part Ia.

5. That Regulation 2 of the regulations for the Visiting Professorship of Marketing, Strategy, and Innovation be amended so as to read:5

2. The Managers of the Fund shall be the Director of Judge Business School, ex officio, and three persons appointed by the Faculty Board of Business and Management, for periods of five years.

6. That Regulation 3 for the Wallenberg Prize be amended so as to read:6

3. The competition shall be open to any member of the University, provided that at the time by which essays are to be sent in not more than nine complete terms have passed since the candidate’s admission to her or his first degree (if any) at this or at any other university.

The Information Strategy and Services Syndicate replaced the Information Technology Syndicate in October 2007 (Grace 1 of 24 October 2007).The Syndicate have recommended a simplification of the regulation to allow for elections in classes (e) and (f) to take place this year.


  • 2It is proposed to extend the deadline for nomination of Chairmen of Examiners and Senior Examiners from the end of the Full Easter Term to the start of the Michaelmas Term, and to extend the deadline for other Examiners to the division of that Term. The regulations are also amended to clarify the duty with regard to examining candidates for Certificates and Diplomas open to non-members of the University. 


  • 3The words in angular brackets will be inserted subject to the approval by Her Majesty in Council of the amendments of Statute approved by Grace 4 of 11 March 2009.


  • 4A correction to the regulations for payment to Examiners and Assessors has been made to include the examination for the degree of Doctor of Engineering.


  • 5Statutes and Ordinances, p. 707. The Faculty Board of Business and Management have recommended that the regulations for the Managers of the Visiting Professorship of Marketing, Strategy, and Innovation Fund be amended to allow for greater flexibility in their appointment.


  • 6Statutes and Ordinances, p. 941. The Managers of the Scandinavian Studies Fund, who award the Wallenberg Prize, have recommended that the terms of eligibility to enter the competition for the Prize be clarified to show that both undergraduate and postgraduate student members of the University may enter.
