THE GAYLORD AND DOROTHY DONNELLEY RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO

The Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation has recently established a postdoctoral fellowship exchange programme between Corpus Christi College and the University of Chicago. Applications are now invited from candidates in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (excluding Law) at Cambridge to spend up to three years at the University of Chicago. The Governing Body of Peterhouse, applying the benefactions of the late William Stone, former Scholar of the College, and of Sir Michael Sobell, intends to elect a number of Research Fellows, who will enter upon their tenure on 1 October 2010.

Candidates must by 1 October 2010 have passed all examinations required for a first degree at a university. The completed application form and the letters from referees must reach the Master by 14 November 2009.

Sidney Sussex College

RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

The College Council wishes to make elections to two Research Fellowships, each tenable for three years, to commence on 1 September 2010. One Fellowship is devoted to those scholars pursuing or intending to pursue research in the Arts and Social Sciences, the other to those working in the Sciences (including Mathematics, Engineering, and the Medical Sciences). These Fellowships are primarily intended to provide opportunities for scholars at the earliest stage of their academic careers to establish a successful research profile.

The pensionable stipend of a Research Fellow is £16,547 a year (at the 1 October 2009 stipend level for point 22 on the University’s single salary spine), or £19,645 a year (point 28) if the Fellow holds the degree of Ph.D. The Fellow will be entitled to a room in College and to Fellows’ dining and other rights. Single residential accommodation will be made available for a service charge (currently £1,532 a year), but for those choosing to live in private accommodation there is a non-pensionable allowance of £3,214 a year and a first dependent child allowance of £870 a year. Increments to the stipend are payable at £581 after the first year and £608 after the second year of tenure to Ph.D. Degree holders. The level of Research Fellowship emoluments is normally reviewed annually when the stipends of University and College officers are reviewed. Research Fellows can apply for book grants of up to £205 a year and research grants of up to £740 a year.

The holder of a Research Fellowship will be encouraged to teach for up to six hours a week, with priority being given to teaching for the College. Additional payment will be made for this teaching at standard University supervision rates. The permission of the College Council is required for other paid work, and all emoluments received must be disclosed to the Council. Council may reduce the Research Fellowship stipend in the light of other income received.

All applications, including references, must be made using the online application form on the College website (http://www.sid.cam.ac.uk/life/personnel/). The closing date is Tuesday, 20 October 2009, for the receipt of the online application plus two references; the latter must also be submitted using the online form. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that both of her or his referees submit the form prior to the deadline. A signed copy of the application will be required from those applicants who are shortlisted and, at that stage, those candidates will be asked to submit two pieces of written work to supplement their application. It is anticipated that interviews for shortlisted applicants will be held during early December 2009.

Further particulars may also be obtained from the College website and any enquiries should be directed to the Fellow Secretary to the Research Fellowship Competition, Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, CB2 3HU (email research.fellowships@sid.cam.ac.uk).
