Graces

Graces submitted to the Regent House on 22 July 2026

The Council submits the following Graces to the Regent House. These Graces, unless they are withdrawn or a ballot is requested in accordance with the regulations for Graces of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, 2024, p. 111), will be deemed to have been approved at 4 p.m. on Friday, 31 July 2026. Further information on requests for a ballot or the amendment of Graces is available to members of the Regent House on the Regent House Petitions site.§

1. That a History Ph.D. Studentship Fund be established in the University, to be governed by the following regulations:1

History Ph.D. Studentship Fund

1. The benefaction received from Arcadia Philanthropic Trust, together with such other sums as may be received or applied for the same purpose, shall form an endowment fund called the History Ph.D. Studentship Fund to support doctoral students studying history in the Faculty of History.

2. The Managers shall be responsible for the administration of the Fund and the application of its income and shall comprise:

(a)the Chair of the Faculty of History who shall be Chair; and

(b)two members of the Faculty of History appointed by the Faculty Board of History, who shall serve for such period as the Faculty Board shall determine.

3. Subject to Regulation 4, the income of the Fund shall be used to provide awards, which shall be called the History Ph.D. Studentship Fund Awards. Arrangements for awards, including the number, tenure and conditions of the Studentships to be awarded in any given year, the expenses to be covered by an award, and the form of the application and selection processes, shall be at the discretion of the Managers and may provide for applications by persons who are not yet members of the University and for the financial circumstances of candidates to be taken into consideration.

4. Any unexpended income in any financial year, including income accrued during any years in which the Studentships are not awarded, may, at the discretion of the Managers:

(a)be awarded to support the research of the holder(s) of the Studentships;

(b)be carried forward for use as income in accordance with Regulation 3 in any one or more subsequent financial years.

2. That the recommendations in paragraphs 8 and 9 of the Report of the General Board, dated 10 June 2026, on the outcomes of the Academic Career Pathways (Research and Teaching) and (Teaching and Scholarship) 2025–26 exercises (Reporter, 6828, 2025–26, p. 524), as revised by the Council’s Notice dated 16 July 2026 (p. 653), be approved.

3. That in Regulation 3 of the Ordinance for the Septemviri (Statutes and Ordinances, 2024, p. 206), the words ‘the Clerk of the Septemviri’ be replaced with ‘the Registrary’.2

4. That with effect from 1 August 2026, the Ordinance for the C. C. Abbott Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, 2024, p. 771) be replaced to read as follows:3

1. The money received from the bequest of the late Professor C. C. Abbott, of Gonville and Caius College, and shall form a fund called the Abbott Fund the income of which shall be used for the supplementation of funds made available by the University to the Fitzwilliam Museum Syndicate to make purchases for the Museum.

2. After provision has been made in accordance with Regulation 1, any unexpended income may be applied at the discretion of the Syndicate towards expenditure associated with purchases supported by the Fund, including but not limited to the costs of insurance, transport, conservation, documentation, photography and storage and a proportion of the salaries of the Curators and other relevant staff commensurate with the proportion of time they spend on activities supported by the Fund.

5. That with effect from 1 August 2026, Regulation 2 of the Ordinance for the Biffen Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, 2024, p. 791) be amended to read as follows:3

2. The income of the Fund shall be expended from time to time by the Fitzwilliam Museum Syndicate to advance the arts and heritage through the acquisition, preservation and promotion of and research into watercolours. The income may be applied to associated costs including but not limited to insurance, transport, conservation, documentation, photography and storage and a proportion of the salaries of the Curators and other relevant staff commensurate with the proportion of time they spend on activities supported by the Fund.

6. That with effect from 1 August 2026, Regulation 2 of the Ordinance for the Cunliffe Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, 2024, p. 825) be amended to read as follows:3

2. (a)  The income of the Fund, which may be allowed to accumulate, shall be expended from time to time by the Fitzwilliam Museum Syndicate on the purchase of works of art.

(b)  After provision has been made in accordance with sub-paragraph (a), any unexpended income may be applied at the discretion of the Syndicate towards expenditure associated with purchases supported by the Fund, including but not limited to the costs of insurance, transport, conservation, documentation, photography and storage and a proportion of the salaries of the Curators and other relevant staff commensurate with the proportion of time they spend on activities supported by the Fund.

7. That with effect from 1 August 2026, Regulation 2 of the Ordinance for the Orlando Gibbons Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, 2024, p. 854) be amended to read as follows:3

2. (a)  In accordance with the desire of the subscribers, the income of the Fund shall be paid annually to the Fitzwilliam Museum Syndicate to be laid out by them in increasing their collection of music, each book so bought to be distinguished by having the name of Orlando Gibbons stamped upon it or in it in such a way as the Syndicate may decide to be most suitable.

(b)  After provision has been made in accordance with sub-paragraph (a), any unexpended income may be applied at the discretion of the Syndicate towards expenditure associated with purchases supported by the Fund, including but not limited to the costs of insurance, transport, conservation, documentation, photography and storage and a proportion of the salaries of the Curators and other relevant staff commensurate with the proportion of time they spend on activities supported by the Fund.

8. That with effect from 1 August 2026, Regulation 1 of the Ordinance for the Gow Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, 2024, p. 857) be amended to read as follows:3

1. The sum received by the University under the will of A. S. F. Gow, M.A., Fellow of Trinity College, Emeritus Brereton Reader in Classics, shall form a fund to be called the Gow Fund. Two thirds of that sum shall be invested as a purchase fund, the income of which shall be available for the purchase of works of art for the Fitzwilliam Museum and associated costs including but not limited to insurance, transport, conservation, documentation, photography and storage and a proportion of the salaries of the Curators and other relevant staff commensurate with the proportion of time they spend on activities supported by the Fund, and one third shall form a general fund the capital or income of which shall be available for any purpose of the Museum including the purchase of works of art or building work.

9. That with effect from 1 August 2026, Regulation 2 of the Ordinance for the Jones Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, 2024, p. 886) be amended to read as follows:3

2. (a)  The income of the Fund shall be expended from time to time by the Fitzwilliam Museum Syndicate on the purchase of pictures or other works of art not less than one hundred years old.

(b)  After provision has been made in accordance with sub-paragraph (a), any unexpended income may be applied at the discretion of the Syndicate towards expenditure associated with purchases supported by the Fund, including but not limited to the costs of insurance, transport, conservation, documentation, photography and storage and a proportion of the salaries of the Curators and other relevant staff commensurate with the proportion of time they spend on activities supported by the Fund.

10. That with effect from 1 August 2026, Regulation 2 of the Ordinance for the Leverton Harris Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, 2024, p. 902) be amended to read as follows:3

2. (a)  The income of the Fund shall be expended from time to time by the Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum on the purchase of works of art.

(b)  After provision has been made in accordance with sub-paragraph (a), any unexpended income may be applied at the discretion of the Director towards expenditure associated with purchases supported by the Fund, including but not limited to the costs of insurance, transport, conservation, documentation, photography and storage and a proportion of the salaries of the Curators and other relevant staff commensurate with the proportion of time they spend on activities supported by the Fund.

11. That with effect from 1 August 2026, Regulation 3 of the Ordinance for the Perceval Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, 2024, p. 943) be amended to read as follows:3

3. (a)  The income of the Fund shall be expended from time to time by the Syndicate on the purchase of letters, relics, or portraits of distinguished members of the University prior to the nineteenth century, or on other objects of art of the same class as the Perceval collections.

(b)  After provision has been made in accordance with sub-paragraph (a), any unexpended income may be applied at the discretion of the Syndicate towards expenditure associated with purchases supported by the Fund, including but not limited to the costs of insurance, transport, conservation, documentation, photography and storage and a proportion of the salaries of the Curators and other relevant staff commensurate with the proportion of time they spend on activities supported by the Fund.

12. That with effect from 1 August 2026, Regulation 2 of the Ordinance for the G. H. W. Rylands Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, 2024, p. 968) be amended to read as follows:3

2. (a)  The income of the Fund shall be expended from time to time by the Fitzwilliam Museum Syndicate on the purchase, or contribution towards the purchase, of objets d’art to be added to the collections in the Fitzwilliam Museum; for this purpose objets d’art shall be deemed to include china, glass, silver, furniture (preferably European and before 1850), and drawings.

(b)  After provision has been made in accordance with sub-paragraph (a), any unexpended income may be applied at the discretion of the Syndicate towards expenditure associated with purchases supported by the Fund, including but not limited to the costs of insurance, transport, conservation, documentation, photography and storage and a proportion of the salaries of the Curators and other relevant staff commensurate with the proportion of time they spend on activities supported by the Fund.

Graces to be submitted to the Regent House at a Congregation on 23 July 2026

The Council has sanctioned the submission of the following Graces to the Regent House at a Congregation to be held on 23 July 2026.

That the following person be admitted to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by incorporation:

1. Jacqueline Anne Tasioulas, Fellow of Clare College, Professor of Medieval English and Scots (Grade 11) in the Faculty of English, Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Oxford (1997).

That the following person be admitted to the degree of Master of Arts under the provisions of Statute B II 2:

2. Catharine Jane Barton, Assistant Registrary in the Academic Division of the University Offices (Deputy School Secretary in the School of the Physical Sciences).

Graces to be submitted to the Regent House at a Congregation on 25 July 2026

The Council has sanctioned the submission of the following Graces to the Regent House at a Congregation to be held on 25 July 2026.

That the following persons be admitted to the degree of Master of Arts under the provisions of Statute B II 2:

1. Shasha Lu, University Associate Professor in the Judge Business School.

2. Angelos Andreas Michaelides, Fellow of Darwin College, Professor of Chemistry (1968) in the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry.
