Graces

Graces submitted to the Regent House on 5 December 2018

The Council submits the following Graces to the Regent House. These Graces, unless they are withdrawn or a ballot is requested in accordance with the regulations for Graces of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 105) will be deemed to have been approved at 4 p.m. on Friday, 14 December 2018.

1. That the recommendations in paragraph 10 of the Report of the Council, dated 15 October 2018, on the use of external finance in accordance with the authority granted by Grace 2 of 10 May 2018 (Reporter, 6522, 2018–19, p. 63) be approved.1

2. That, on the recommendation of the General Board, the period in which the General Board is required to act under Special Ordinance C (vii) B. 18(a) in respect of the vacancy in the Professorship of Engineering (1875) be extended until 31 March 2020 or until such earlier date as the Board shall determine after consultation with the Council of the School of Technology and the Faculty Board of Engineering.2

3. That a Kirk Distinguished Visiting Fellowships Fund be established in the University, to be governed by the following regulations:3

Kirk Distinguished Visiting Fellowships Fund

1. The funds received from the Turner-Kirk Charitable Trust, together with such other sums as may be received or applied for the same purpose, shall form an endowment fund called the Kirk Distinguished Visiting Fellowships Fund to promote the study of mathematics by women and other under-represented groups and advance research in the field of mathematics.

2. The Managers shall be responsible for the administration of the Fund and the application of its income and shall comprise at least three members of the Management Committee of the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences.

3. Subject to Regulation 6, the income of the Fund shall, and (if the Managers think fit) the capital of the Fund may, be applied towards the travelling expenses and subsistence allowance of Kirk Distinguished Visiting Fellows. A Kirk Distinguished Visiting Fellow shall be appointed by the Managers for a period of not more than six months, provided that the Managers may, exceptionally, make an appointment for one year.

4. It shall be the duty of a Kirk Distinguished Visiting Fellow to participate in the Institute’s research programme and to promote the study of mathematics by women and other under-represented groups.

5. A Kirk Distinguished Visiting Fellow shall be required to reside in the University.

6. After provision has been made in accordance with Regulation 3, such further payments may be made from the relevant Fund in support of the work of a Kirk Distinguished Visiting Fellow as may be approved by the Managers.

4. That Regulation 2 of the regulations for the Hugh Watson Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 1007) be amended so as to read:4

The first charge on the income of the Fund shall be the cost of the stipend, national insurance, and pension contributions of the holder of the University office of Curator or Assistant Curator or Senior Assistant Curator in Malacology (Watson) in the Department of Zoology. After provision has been made for the office of Curator or Assistant Curator or Senior Assistant Curator the remaining income of the Fund shall be used for the maintenance and enrichment of the molluscan collections and for the promotion of malacological interests, as the Faculty Board of Biology may from time to time decide on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Zoology in consultation with the Director of the Museum of Zoology.

  • 4The Council, on the recommendation of the General Board and the Faculty Board of Biology, is proposing changes to enable the Hugh Watson Fund to support a curatorial office in the Museum of Zoology, the seniority of the office to be determined by the General Board (see also the Notice on p. 158). These changes are in line with the terms of the bequest with which the Fund was established.
