Report of the Council on building works at the ADC Theatre

The Council begs leave to report to the University as follows:

1. In this Report the Council is seeking approval for building works to re-roof, and improve ventilation of, the auditorium at the ADC Theatre.

2. The ADC Theatre is the oldest University playhouse in the United Kingdom. The Theatre’s aim is to provide an opportunity for students and amateurs to experience and learn about all aspects of theatre by presenting professional standard productions.

3. A redevelopment project to modernize the facilities and structure of the building was completed in 2008. Proposals to introduce ventilation into the auditorium were developed but not taken forward at that time. The current project seeks to install the necessary mechanical plant alongside planned maintenance works to replace the finish of the existing auditorium roof and renew the ceiling. Additional works to improve the overall safety of the building and the amenities available to staff of the ADC Theatre will also be undertaken. The roof works in particular will reduce heat loss/gain and minimize energy usage and maintenance costs.

4. The estimated cost of the project is within the range of £720,000 to £770,000, with funding from the ADC Theatre, the Minor Works Fund, and the Buildings Maintenance Fund. The building work is scheduled to begin no later than March 2018, subject to authorization of the scheme by the Resource Management Committee. A planning application was submitted to Cambridge City Council in September 2017.

5. Drawings of the proposed scheme are displayed for the information of the University in the Schools Arcade and are reproduced online at https://www.prao.admin.cam.ac.uk/capital-planning/plans-and-drawings. A location plan is shown below .

6. The Council recommends:

I. That approval is given for building works at the ADC Theatre as described in this Report.
