Regulations for examinations

Economics Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 313)

With effect from 1 October 2015

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Economics, have approved an amendment to the title of a paper in Part IIa.

Regulation 16.

By amending the title of Paper 4 so as to read:

Education Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 319)

With immediate effect

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Education, have approved a correction to Schedule 1, governing subjects and papers in Section III of Part I of the Education Tripos, so as to align it with the regulations for Part I of the English Tripos for subjects in English, and English and Drama. The Schedule has been amended so as to remove the reference to ‘Practical criticism and critical practice’ (Paper 6 of Part I of the English Tripos (Old Regulations)) and to replace it with reference to ‘Practical criticism and critical practice’ (Paper 1 of Part I of the English Tripos (New Regulations)).

SCHEDULE 1:
SUBJECTS AND PAPERS FOR SECTION III OF PART I OF THE EDUCATION TRIPOS

English

English and Drama

By the addition of the following paper to the list of two or three papers that may be offered:

Practical criticism and critical practice (Paper 1 of Part I of the English Tripos (New Regulations))

And by removing the following paper:

Practical criticism and critical practice (Paper 6 of Part I of the English Tripos (Old Regulations))

The Faculty Board of Education are satisfied that no candidate’s preparation for the examination will be adversely affected.

Education Tripos: Correction

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 319)

With effect from 1 October 2015

In the Notice amending the entry for Classics in Schedule 1, governing subjects and papers for Section III of Part I of the Education Tripos (Reporter, 6383, 2014–15, p. 486), the first sentence, as amended, should have read:

Candidates shall offer the following two papers:

Passages for translation from Latin authors (Paper 3 of Part Ib of the Classical Tripos)

Latin literature (Paper 6 of Part Ib of the Classical Tripos) (The examination requirements for this paper are set out in the regulations for Part Ib of the Classical Tripos)

Engineering Tripos, Parts IIa and IIb

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 325)

With effect from 1 October 2015

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Engineering, have approved amendments to the regulations for the Tripos as follows: with the Faculty Board’s permission, to allow students to present themselves for honours in Part IIa in the year next but one after obtaining honours in Part Ib, or to take Part IIb in the year next but one after obtaining honours in Part IIa; to produce class-lists for all of Part IIa and all of Part IIb, rather than for each engineering area; to allow the Part IIb class-list to be separated into three classes (Distinction, Merit, and Pass); to clarify that candidates spending terms studying at a certified institution shall be deemed to have kept those terms; and to remove the Technical University of Munich from the approved institutions for study exchange listed in the Schedule.

Regulation 15.

By inserting the following new sub-paragraph (b) and renumbering existing sub-paragraph (b) as (c):

(b)a student who has obtained honours in Part Ib of the Engineering Tripos, in the year next but one after so obtaining honours, provided that he or she presents a reasoned case to the Faculty Board by the division of the Easter Term of the year in which Part Ib is taken;

Regulation 22.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

22. The names of the candidates who obtain honours shall be arranged in three classes, the second of which shall be divided into two divisions. The names in the first and third classes and in each division of the second class shall be arranged in alphabetical order. For special excellence in Part IIa a mark of distinction may be awarded. A note shall be attached to the names of those candidates who qualify for each combination of subjects in Part IIa, announced by the Faculty Board under Regulation 16 as an engineering area.

Regulation 23.

By inserting the following words ‘and to have kept those terms for the purpose of the regulations for Residence and Precincts of the University’ at the end of the first sentence.

By removing ‘Technical University of Munich’ from the Schedule of institutions approved for the purpose of Regulation 23 (Exchange Programmes).

Regulation 24.

By inserting new sub-paragraph (c) so as to read:

(c)presents a reasoned case to the Faculty Board by the division of the Easter Term of the year in which Part IIa is taken, should he or she wish to proceed to Part IIb in the year next but one after obtaining honours in Part IIa;

Regulation 31.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

31. The names of the candidates who obtain honours shall be arranged in alphabetical order within three classes: Distinction, Merit, and Pass. A note shall be attached to the names of those candidates who qualify for each combination of subjects in Part IIb, announced by the Faculty Board under Regulation 25 as an engineering area.

Historical Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 347)

With effect from 1 October 2015

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board for History, have approved an amendment to the scheme of examination for Part II of the Historical Tripos as follows:

Regulation 16.

By removing the reference to Papers 23 and 24 in sub-section (vii), as these are permanently specified as falling mainly in the period after 1750.

Human, Social, and Political Sciences Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 355)

With effect from 1 October 2015

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Human, Social, and Political Science, have approved an amendment to the regulations so as to allow a change in title of four Archaeology papers.

Regulation 15.

By amending the titles of Papers ARC18–21 so as to read:

Law Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 368)

With effect from 1 October 2015

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Law, have approved an amendment to Regulation 15 so as to move Paper 12 – International law from Group II to Group III.

Manufacturing Engineering Tripos, Parts IIa and IIb

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 375)

With effect from 1 October 2015

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Engineering, have approved amendments to the regulations for the Tripos as follows: with the Faculty Board’s permission, to allow students to present themselves for honours in Part IIa in the year next but one after obtaining honours in Part Ib of the Engineering Tripos; to clarify that candidates spending terms studying at a certified institution shall be deemed to have kept those terms; and to allow candidates on approved placements outside the University’s Precincts to count terms towards residence.

Regulation 2.

By amending Regulation 2 so as to read:

2. The following may present themselves for honours in Part IIa:

(a)a student who has obtained honours in Part Ib of the Engineering Tripos or in Part I of the Chemical Engineering Tripos may be a candidate for honours in Part IIa of the Manufacturing Engineering Tripos in the year after so obtaining honours;

(b)a student who has obtained honours in Part Ib of the Engineering Tripos may be a candidate for honours in Part IIa of the Manufacturing Engineering Tripos in the year next but one after so obtaining honours, provided that he or she presents a reasoned case to the Faculty Board by the division of the Easter Term of the year in which Part Ib is taken;

provided always that the student has kept seven terms and that twelve complete terms have not passed after her or his first term of residence.

Regulation 4.

By inserting the following words ‘and to have kept those terms for the purpose of the regulations for Residence and Precincts of the University’ at the end of the first sentence.

Regulation 5.

By inserting new Regulation 5 as follows and renumbering the remaining regulations:

5. Attendance by candidates for the Part IIb examination on placements outside the University precincts, under arrangements approved by the Faculty Board of Engineering, shall count towards the keeping of terms for the purpose of the regulations for Residence and Precincts of the University.

Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 385)

With immediate effect

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages, have approved an amendment to Regulation 18(b) so as to allow for the addition of Modern Greek as one of the languages in which papers may be set in Parts Ib and II, as specified in Schedule B.

Regulation 18.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

(b)In Part Ib and Part II papers shall be set in Modern Greek, in Neo-Latin, in linguistics, in Catalan, Dutch, Polish, and Ukrainian, in Ibero-Lusophone studies, and in comparative studies, as specified in Schedule B.

The Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages have confirmed that no candidate’s preparation for the examination will be affected.

Natural Sciences Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 405)

With effect from 1 October 2015

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Natural Sciences Tripos Management Committee, have approved an amendment to the regulations regarding eligibility for Part Ia and to clarify the wording regarding eligibility for Part Ib and Part II.

Regulation 2.

By deleting sub-paragraph (b) and amending the regulation so as to read:

2. A student who has not obtained honours in another Honours Examination may present him- or herself as a candidate for honours in Part Ia, provided that he or she has kept one term and that three complete terms have not passed after her or his first term of residence.

Regulation 3.

By replacing the term 'another Honours Examination' with 'an Honours Examination'.

Regulation 4.

By amending the regulation so as to read (retaining footnotes):

A student who not earlier than the fourth term after her or his first term of residence has obtained honours in an Honours Examination other than Part Ia of the Natural Sciences Tripos or Part Ia of the Medical and Veterinary Sciences Tripos, may be a candidate for honours in Part II in the year next after so obtaining honours; provided that the student has kept seven terms and that twelve complete terms have not passed after her or his first term of residence.

Examination in Computational Biology for the M.Phil. Degree

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 521)

With effect from 1 October 2015

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Mathematics, have approved the following amendments to the regulations: to allow the Degree Committee power to announce additional optional modules no later than the beginning of Michaelmas Term; to revise the number of modules from nine to eight, including half modules; and to reflect the requirement of an additional two-hour examination.

Regulation 1.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

1. The Degree Committee for the Faculty of Mathematics shall publish, not later than the end of the Easter Term each year, a list of mandatory and optional modules for the examination to be held in the academical year next following, provided that the Degree Committee shall have power to give notice of additional optional modules not later than the beginning of the Michaelmas Term preceding the examination. In publishing the list the Degree Committee shall announce the method of examination of each module, which may include a written examination, a long essay, shorter essays, project work, or a combination of these; they shall specify the limits to be placed on the length of any essays and project work.

Regulation 2.

By amending sub-paragraph (a), introducing new sub-paragraph (b), and renumbering existing (b) as (c) so as to read:

2. Each candidate shall offer:

(a)the written examinations or other assessment specified for a total of eight modules, inclusive of half modules, chosen from the list published under Regulation 1;

(b)a written examination of two hours’ duration addressing the material taught under Regulation 1;

(c)a report of not more than 18,000 words in length and an oral presentation based on a laboratory project carried out by the candidate in one or more institutions approved by the Degree Committee.

Examination in Developmental Biology for the M.Phil. Degree

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 524)

With effect from 1 October 2015

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Biology, have given permission for the amendment of the regulations to remove the requirement for candidates to undertake practical work.

By deleting Regulation 2 and renumbering the remaining regulation.

Examination in Screen Media and Cultures for the M.Phil. Degree

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 545)

With effect from 1 October 2016

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages, have approved the retitling of the above course of study for the M.Phil. Degree to ‘Film and Screen Studies’.

The programme specification and regulations are otherwise unchanged.

Certificate in Humanities Computing for Languages

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 579)

With immediate effect

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages, have agreed that the examination in the Certificate in Humanities Computing for Languages will be suspended in 2015–16.

Diplomas and Certificates open to non-members of the University

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 589)

With effect from 1 October 2015

The General Board have agreed to add the following awards to the Schedule of Diplomas and Certificates open to non-members of the University:

The Board have also approved the following special regulations for the above Diploma offered by the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership:

Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Business

The Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Business shall be administered by the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership and shall be awarded on the basis of the completion of 60 credits from either the Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Business or the Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Value Chains, 60 credits gained by attending practitioner/professional development workshops, and completion of assessed work equivalent to at least 12,000 words.

With effect from 1 October 2016

The General Board have agreed to add the following award to the Schedule of Diplomas and Certificates open to non-members of the University:

Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Medicine

1. The Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Medicine shall be administered by the Strategic Committee of the Institute of Continuing Education.

2. The scheme of examination for the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Medicine shall consist of three core modules listed in the Schedule to these regulations. Each module shall be examined by assignments of 3,000 words, or assignments deemed their equivalent by the Degree Committee for the Faculties of Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, except where other methods of assessment are published in individual module descriptions.

Examination in Clinical Medicine for the M.St. Degree

With effect from 1 October 2016

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Clinical Medicine and the Strategic Committee of the Institute of Continuing Education, have approved Clinical Medicine as a subject for the Master of Studies Degree with effect from 1 October 2016. Special regulations for the examination in the subject have been approved as follows:

Clinical Medicine

1. The scheme of examination for the course of study in Clinical Medicine for the degree of Master of Studies shall consist of:

(a)three core modules, clinical research, clinical education, and clinical leadership, which will be examined by assignments of 3,000 words, or assignments deemed their equivalent by the Degree Committee for the Faculties of Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, except where other methods of assessment are published in individual module descriptions;

and

(b)course-work and self-directed learning as announced by the Degree Committee not later than the end of the Easter Term preceding the examination;

and

(c)three essays which shall be examined by assignments of 2,000 words, or assignments deemed their equivalent by the Degree Committee on set topics falling within a field approved by the Degree Committee;

and

(d)a thesis, of not more than 10,000 words in length, or an assignment deemed its equivalent by the Degree Committee, including footnotes and appendices but excluding bibliography, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee.

2. Each candidate shall pursue the examination in one of the themes approved from time to time by the General Board on the recommendation of the Degree Committee and specified in the Schedule to these regulations.

3. At the discretion of the Examiners the examination shall include an oral examination on the thesis and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls; such an oral may include questions relating to one or more of the other pieces of work submitted by the candidate under Regulation 1.

4. The Examiners may recommend to the Degree Committee that it recommends to the Strategic Committee of the Institute of Continuing Education the award of the Postgraduate Certificate to a candidate who has satisfactorily completed the three core modules specified in Regulation 1(a) but has not completed, or fails to reach the required standard in, the work required under Regulation 1(b), 1(c), and 1(d).
