Graces

Graces submitted to the Regent House on 24 April 2014

The Council submits the following Graces to the Regent House. These Graces, unless they are withdrawn or a ballot is requested in accordance with the regulations for Graces of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 103), will be deemed to have been approved at 4 p.m. on Friday, 2 May 2014.

1. That on the recommendation of the Council and the Nominating Committee, Mr Mark Lewisohn, of Christ’s College, be reappointed a member of the Council in class (e) for four years from 1 January 2015.1

2. That on the recommendation of the Council and the Nominating Committee, Mr John Shakeshaft, of Trinity College, be reappointed a member of the Council in class (e) for four years from 1 January 2015.1

3. That The Right Honourable Igor, Baron Judge of Draycote, be appointed Chair of the Septemviri to serve with immediate effect until 31 December 2015.

4. That, notwithstanding Special Ordinances A (vii) 1 and D (i) 1, Professor Mary Fowler, Master of Darwin College, be appointed one of the Septemviri to serve with immediate effect until 31 December 2016.2

5. That, notwithstanding Special Ordinances A (vii) 1 and D (i) 1, Professor Michael Proctor, Provost of King’s College, be appointed one of the Septemviri to serve with immediate effect until 31 December 2016.2

6. That Professor Dame Athene Donald, Master-elect of Churchill College, be appointed one of the Septemviri to serve from 1 October 2014 until 31 December 2015.

7. That on the nomination of the Council, Professor Christopher Forsyth, of Robinson College, be appointed University Advocate for one year from 1 October 2014.

8. That, in respect of any examination held in the Easter Term 2014,

(a)the Registrary may, notwithstanding the regulations for the publication of lists of successful candidates in examinations (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 239),

(i)accept and publish a list later than the latest day or time prescribed by Ordinance;

(ii)accept and publish a list that has been signed by a majority but not by all of the Examiners;

(iii)accept and publish any amended list;

(b)the Examiners may, notwithstanding those regulations and the regulations for the examination concerned, include the names of some or all of the candidates under any of the following headings:

(i)Declared to have deserved honours: to be classified later.

(ii)Candidates successful in the examination: to be classified later.

(iii)Candidates on whom no decision has yet been reached because of insufficient evidence.

(iv)Candidates to whose names a distinctive mark may be attached in an amended list.3

9. That, in respect of the Congregations for General Admission to Degrees to be held in June 2014, the Vice-Chancellor may, notwithstanding Regulation 7 of the regulations for admission to degrees (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 181), allow a person’s name to remain in the list for the conferment of a degree unless he is satisfied by information given in the notice of intention to non placet that there are prima facie reasons requiring further consideration before the degree is conferred.3

10. That, in respect of any M.Phil. examination held in the Easter Term 2014, notwithstanding Regulation 10(b) of the general regulations for the degree of Master of Philosophy (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 506) and Regulation 5 of the regulations for Degree Committees (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 597), (i) a Degree Committee may appoint additional Examiners or Assessors for the examinations for the degree; and (ii) a resolution that a person be approved for the award of the M.Phil. Degree shall be valid if passed with the concurrence of the votes of the majority of members of the Degree Committee present at the meeting.3

11. That the recommendation in paragraph 5 of the Report of the General Board, dated 28 February 2014, on the establishment of a Readership in Transfusion Medicine (Reporter, 6341, 2013–14, p. 428) be approved.

12. That, with effect from 1 October 2013, in Regulation 1 for the George Peter Baker Prize in Medicine (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 767) the reference to ‘Part II’ be replaced with a reference to ‘Part III’, and Regulation 3 be amended so as to read:4

3. A Prize shall be awarded each year to the candidate who achieves the highest combined score in the Single Best Answer Papers Ia and Ib and structured-answer components of Part III of the Final M.B. Examination held in that academical year.

13. That, with effect from 1 October 2013, in Regulation 1 for the Lewin Prize Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 867) the reference to ‘Part II’ be replaced with a reference to ‘Part III’, and Regulation 3 be amended so as to read:4

3. The Prize shall be awarded each year to the candidate who achieves the second highest combined score in the Single Best Answer Papers Ia and Ib and structured-answer components of Part III of the Final M.B. Examination held in that academical year.

14. That, with effect from 1 October 2013, in Regulations 1 and 3 for the Roger Morris Prizes in Medicine and Surgery (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 890) the references to ‘Part II’ be replaced with references ‘Part III’.4

15. That the regulations for the Cambridge Display Technology Cavendish Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 784) be rescinded in their entirety. 5

  • 1Mr Lewisohn is a Group Managing Director of UBS and is Global Head of Technology, Media and Telecommunications, and Chair of European Equity Capital Markets at UBS Investment Bank. Mr Shakeshaft is Chair of the Audit Committee and is a Non-Executive Director of Kinnevik, AB, Chair of the Economy Bank, NV, and other companies. Dame Mavis McDonald has announced her intention to step down from the Council on 31 December 2014; a Notice concerning the appointment of a new external member will be published later this term. The continuing external member is Dame Shirley Pearce.

  • 5The Fund was established by Grace 2 of 27 October 1999 with authority for the capital and the income of the Fund to be used by the Managers for the support of research directed by the Cavendish Professor of Physics. There being no remaining balance, the Fund Managers have agreed to wind up the Fund.


Graces to be submitted to the Regent House at a Congregation on 26 April 2014

The Council has sanctioned the submission of the following Graces to the Regent House at a Congregation to be held on 26 April 2014:

That the following persons be admitted to the degree of Master of Arts under the provisions of Statute B II 2:

1. Nigel Harvey Barker, Senior Manager in the Local Examinations Syndicate.

2. Fehmi Cirak, Reader in Computational Mechanics in the Department of Engineering.

3. Paul Reginald Dampier, Director in the University Offices.

4. Tom Davies Levinson, Assistant Registrary in the Academic Division of the University Offices.

5. Inderjit Seehra, of Darwin College, Director of the Human Resources Division of the University Offices.

6. Roger Taylor, Fellow of Hughes Hall.

Graces submitted to the Regent House on 12 March 2014: Correction

Grace 1 submitted to the Regent House on 12 March 2014 (Reporter, 6342, 2013–14, p. 439) contained an error.

The Grace included an amended Table of Fees; Table 2 contained the incorrect fee for the M.Phil. Degree in Primary Care Research for overseas students for 2015–16. The entry for this M.Phil. should have read as follows:
