The Vice-Chancellor gives notice that he has accepted with gratitude
(i)a bequest of approximately £20,000 under the Will of the late Joseph Petty, the income of which will be used to support a Sir William Wade Prize for Civil Liberties and Human Rights and the Squire Law Library;
(ii)a further gift of £2,000, given under Gift Aid arrangements, from Dr Irene Gore to be added to the Olga Youhotsky and Catherine Matthews Fund for Prizes in Russian.
The Council is submitting a Grace (Grace 4, p. 492) to the Regent House for the approval of regulations to govern the Sir William Wade Fund.
In recognition of Dr Gore’s support the Council is submitting a Grace to the Regent House (Grace 5, p. 492) to retitle the Fund and Prize as the Olga Youhotsky, Catherine Matthews, and Irene Gore Fund and Prize.
The Vice-Chancellor wishes to remind members of the University that a Congregation will be held on Wednesday, 20 June 2012, for the conferment of Honorary Degrees (see Graces 1–8, p. 493 and his Notice of 9 January on p. 359).
Admission to the Congregation will be strictly by ticket only and further details of the arrangements including application for tickets are expected to be published in the Reporter on 25 April 2012.
The Vice-Chancellor begs leave to refer to his Notice of 13 February 2012 (Reporter, 2011–12, p. 453), concerning proposed amending Statutes for Churchill College. He hereby gives notice that in the opinion of the Council the proposed Statutes make no alteration of any Statute which affects the University, and do not require the consent of the University; that the interests of the University are not prejudiced by them, and that the Council has resolved to take no action upon them, provided that the Council will wish to reconsider the proposed Statutes if they have not been submitted to the Privy Council by 5 March 2013.
The Council has received the comments on the title of the Professorship by Professor A. W. F. Edwards at the Discussion on 7 February 2012 (Reporter, p. 460) of this Report. It notes that the University has established other MRC Research Professorships. It has consulted the General Board who have confirmed that the person for whom the Professorship is to be established wishes the title to be that set out in the Report. The Board wish to make clear that the inclusion of the word Research in the title follows the wording of the relevant MRC scheme and does not imply the creation of a new category of Professor, as suggested by Professor Edwards.
The Council is submitting a Grace (Grace 3, p. 492) for the approval of the recommendations in the Report.
Both Senate-House Yard and the Combination Room will be closed on 21 March 2012, on the occasion of the Congregation for the Installation of the Chancellor. Access to the University Offices will be from Trinity Lane.
Only those with admission tickets, and other authorized persons will be permitted to enter the Yard on 21 March.
