The examination for the Winchester Reading Prize (see Special No 6 of the Reporter on 5 November 2010, p. 13) will be held in the Senate-House on Monday, 9 May 2011, at 2 p.m.
The selected subjects for 2011 are: The book of Ecclesiastes, Chapter 1; Psalm 39 (‘I said I will take heed to my ways’); from Thackeray’s novel, Vanity Fair:
(i)‘Before the Curtain’ [the prologue];
(ii)the closing paragraphs of Chapter 32, beginning ‘All that day from morning until past sunset’ to the end of the chapter;
(iii)from the beginning of chapter 64 to the line ending ‘. . . the less that is said about her doings the better.’;
from Thackeray’s The Book of Snobs, chapter 15, ‘On University Snobs’; from the beginning of the chapter to the line ending ‘both wine-party givers and dinner givers were snobs.’
