University Offices

Director of Medical and Veterinary Education (DoMVE) (Part-time) in the Faculty of Biology

(Re-advertisement) Applications are invited for the University office of Director of Medical and Veterinary Education (DoMVE) in the Faculty of Biology. The role of DoMVE is essential to delivery and maintaining standards of the highly respected medical and veterinary degree courses at the University of Cambridge. In particular the work of the DoMVE is critical in ensuring that teaching is co-ordinated between the various contributing Departments to provide a coherent medical and veterinary education in the first three years. In addition, the post-holder is responsible for checking that the requirements of external regulatory bodies are satisfied, and that there is effective liaison between the various interested bodies within the University of Cambridge. The post-holder must have the necessary confidence and gravitas to allow her or him to deal with these external and internal bodies with sufficient authority. The DoMVE is a key facet of the School’s compliance with the University’s Fitness for Medical and Veterinary Practice procedures and the key figurehead to whom all preclinical students are directed if they have personal or academic problems which might impact on their future medical careers. The DoMVE will be responsible for the development and implementation of the decisions of the Faculty Board of Biology on those aspects of medical and veterinary education that fall within the Board’s remit, and will undertake liaison with the Director of Medical Education in the Clinical School and the Dean of the Veterinary School to co-ordinate preclinical and clinical education. The post-holder will need to ensure that adequate liaison takes place with the Colleges and the Senior Tutors’ Committee in relation to matters such as admissions and College teaching.

The post may only be held concurrently with a substantive teaching post held at the University of Cambridge, with 50 per cent of the post-holder’s time devoted to the duties of Director. The post-holder will be expected to seek unpaid leave of absence from her or his substantive Departmental post. The Director will not normally be permitted to hold a substantial College office.

The appointment is for a fixed term of five years to 30 September 2015, subject to a probationary period of nine months, in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal. The stipend (point 70 of grade 12) is currently £67,960 a year, pro rata. The person appointed will be eligible for membership of the Universities Superannuation Scheme. There is an annual holiday entitlement of 28 days, pro rata, including public holidays.

Applications, including the names of two referees who have agreed to support the application, should be sent to the Secretary of the Appointments Committee (Dr C. Pillinger), 17 Mill Lane, Cambridge, CB2 1RX (tel. 01223 766905, email cp316@cam.ac.uk), so as to reach him not later than noon on 27 August 2010. When applying please quote Reference ZZ06857.

Intending applicants may wish to consult informally Professor Margaret Stanley, Chairman of the Faculty Board of Biology (Department of Pathology, Tennis Court Road, Cambridge, CB2 1QP, tel. 01223 333690, email mas1001@hermes.cam.ac.uk), or Dr Fiona Russell, Secretary of the Faculty Board of Biology (17 Mill Lane, Cambridge, CB2 1RX, tel. 01223 766899, email fjr22@cam.ac.uk). Further details are available from Dr Russell. Interviews will be held in September 2010.

University Lecturer in Palaeolithic Archaeology in the Department of Archaeology

Applications are invited for a University Lectureship in the Department of Archaeology (Faculty of Archaeology and Anthropology) from 1 January 2011 or as soon as possible thereafter, made available by the forthcoming retirement of Professor Sir Paul Mellars. The successful applicant will have research and teaching interests in Palaeolithic Archaeology, and will be expected to hold a Ph.D. Degree at the time of appointment. The salary is on the Lecturer scale grade 9 (£36,715–£46,510) and will be pensionable (USS).

Applications from scholars in any sub-field of Palaeolithic Archaeology are encouraged, but preference will be given to those with research interests and teaching expertise that complement existing strengths in the Department. The attraction and supervision of graduate students, and the acquisition of research grants, are key elements of Cambridge Archaeology. Applicants must therefore have a proven ability to undertake research, a strong publication record, and, preferably, an active research project that will provide opportunities for graduate student collaborations. Experience in fund-raising for research projects is desirable.

The post-holder will help coordinate and contribute to courses in Palaeolithic Archaeology (Papers A6 and A7), and be ready to explore new teaching developments (e.g. increasing modularity within the Tripos system). He/she will be expected to supervise undergraduate dissertations in his/her area of expertise, and to contribute to team-taught courses, general archaeology courses, and seminars within the Department where appropriate. He/she will have the opportunity to provide supervisions for undergraduates, for which the Lecturer receives extra payment from the Colleges. The Department is anticipating an expansion of its current M.Phil. programme, and the successful applicant will be expected to take a strong role in developing and providing teaching in the M.Phil. in Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Archaeology, as well as in attracting Ph.D. students.

For information about the Department of Archaeology see http://www.arch.cam.ac.uk/.

Applications should consist of: the CHRIS/6 Cover Sheet for CVs downloadable from http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/hr/forms/chris6/, a curriculum vitae including a list of publications, and a letter describing the candidate’s background, research interests, teaching experience and interests, and administrative experience. Applications should be sent to Mrs Helen Mawdsley, Department of Archaeology, University of Cambridge, Downing Street, Cambridge, CB2 3DZ, UK (fax +44 (0)1223 333503, email reception@arch.cam.ac.uk) by Friday, 17 September 2010. References will be sought at the short-listing stage, but the names of three referees must be included on the CHRIS/6 CV cover form. Interviews will be held in late November.

For an informal chat about the post, applicants may speak to Dr Preston Miracle (tel. +44 (0)1223 333532 or 766948, email ptm21@cam.ac.uk).

When applying please quote Reference JD06756.
