Nuffield College

WARDEN

Nuffield College is a postgraduate College specializing in the Social Sciences. The Fellows of the College are proceeding to the election of a Head of the College in succession to Stephen Nickell, CBE, FBA, who vacates the Wardenship on 31 August 2012. St Hilda’s College and the Faculty of History, University of Oxford

ONE-YEAR DEPARTMENTAL LECTURERSHIP IN EARLY MODERN BRITISH HISTORY

Salary: £28,983 to £30,747 a year

Applications are invited for a one-year, fixed-term Departmental Lecturership in Early Modern British History, tenable from 1 October 2010. The appointment is to fulfil teaching needs arising from a period of academic leave, resulting from the award of a Philip Leverhulme Prize to a current postholder, and is non-renewable. Applications are invited from those with active research interests in any field of British history between 1500 and 1700.

The successful candidate will be appointed to a one-year, fixed-term Stipendiary Lecturership in St Hilda’s College and to a Departmental Lecturership in the Faculty of History for the same period. For the College the appointee will be required to provide a combined total of eight hours of tutorial teaching a week during term, and to participate in the pastoral care of students and the administration of History within the College, including admissions and marking College exam­inations.

St Peter’s College

DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT AND ALUMNI RELATIONS

St Peter’s College, Oxford, wishes to appoint a Director of Development and Alumni Relations to lead the College’s fundraising and related alumni activities.

This is a challenging and hands-on post in an ambitious and thriving College of Oxford University. It will suit a highly motivated individual with a track record of achieving targets in a demanding environment. It will involve working closely with the incoming Master, Mark Damazer, the Fellows of the College, and St Peter’s alumni.

The salary will be not less than £55,000 a year with other benefits that reflect the importance that the College attaches to this post. It is pensionable within the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS). The successful candidate will be appointed for three years in the first instance. He or she will be a Fellow of the College.

University College

STIPENDIARY LECTURERSHIP IN LAW

Applications are invited for one twelve-hour Stipendiary Lecturership or two six-hour Stipendiary Lecturerships in Law tenable for one year from 1 September 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The appointee will be expected to teach 12 hours or 6 hours a week as appropriate averaged over the three eight-week terms of the year, and to assist with student academic and welfare support, undergraduate admissions, and administration such as setting collections (College examinations), writing references, and preparation for examinations, as necessary.

If appointed to a twelve-hour Lecturership, the postholder will be required to take tutorial responsibility for and teach three of the undergraduate subjects listed below; if appointed to a six-hour Lecturership, the appointee must be able to offer two subjects from the following:

Law Moderations: Criminal Law; A Roman Introduction to Private Law

Final Honour School: Administrative Law; Contract; Jurisprudence; Land Law; Trusts.

The salary will be on the Senior Tutors’ Stipendiary Lecturership scale, which for a teaching stint of 12 hours is on the scale £24,273 to £27,319 (depending on experience). The Lecturer will have access to a teaching room in College and will be entitled to lunch and dinner free of charge in College throughout the year except when the kitchens are closed, and to a number of other benefits.

STIPENDIARY COLLEGE LECTURERSHIP IN MODERN EUROPEAN HISTORY

Applications are invited for a Stipendiary College Lecturership in Modern European History, tenable for nine months from 1 October 2010 until 30 June 2011. The appointment is to fulfil teaching needs arising from a period of sabbatical and special research leave by Dr Oliver Zimmer, who holds a Tutorial Fellowship at University College in association with a University Lecturership (CUF) in History, and is non-renewable. Applications are invited from those with active research interests in any field of European history between 1750 and the present.

The appointee will be required to provide six hours of tutorial teaching a week for the College during the eight weeks of full term, averaged over the academical year, and to participate in the pastoral care of students and the administration of the subject in the College, including undergraduate admissions and marking College examinations.

The stipend of the post will be in the range of £12,137 to £13,660 a year, plus a number of College benefits. University of Oxford

REGIUS PROFESSORSHIP OF DIVINITY

(in association with Christ Church)

The University of Oxford intends to offer an appointment to the Regius Professorship of Divinity in the Faculty of Theology from 1 October 2011, or as soon as possible thereafter. The person appointed will have an outstanding research and publication record in her or his particular field.

The Regius Professor of Divinity is appointed to teach and research in the area of Christian Doctrine, either historical or contemporary, or in the study of religions more generally, though with a central focus on the Christian faith. The person appointed will be a scholar of distinction, with an outstanding research and publication record, who will exercise leadership in research and develop graduate studies in her or his area of specialization. The Professor will also be expected to take a leading part in developing the work of the Faculty of Theology generally. The Regius Professor of Divinity is expected to take a leading role in speaking for Theology in Oxford and in the wider world.

The Professor will hold a canonry at Christ Church. The person appointed will either be ordained in Priest’s Orders in the Church of England or in an Episcopal Church in communion with the Church of England, or be eligible for and prepared to accept ordination.

STANLEY LEWIS PROFESSORSHIP OF ISRAEL STUDIES

The University of Oxford intends to make an appointment to the Stanley Lewis Professorship of Israel Studies. The post will be based in the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies and in the Department of Politics and International Relations, or the Department of Sociology, or the Department of Economics. The Professorship is associated with a Fellowship at St Anne’s College.

The university will be looking for a scholar of international distinction, with the ability to manage a substantial research programme and to make a major contribution to the long-term development of Israel Studies within the university. The successful candidate will have an excellent record of research and publication in the field. He or she will also teach on graduate and undergraduate teaching programmes in the university, and will be expected to contribute to the leadership of the School, Department, and College.

PROFESSORSHIP OF SCIENTIFIC VISUALISATION

(in association with Pembroke College)

The University of Oxford intends to make an appointment to the Professorship of Scientific Visualisation in the Oxford e-Research Centre (OeRC) from 1 October 2011 or earlier, if possible.

The Professor will be expected to establish an internationally leading research group in scientific visualization. The overarching research objectives of the new chair include new algorithms and techniques for scientific visualization and the development of visual analysis tools to facilitate understanding of increasingly complex and rich scientific data. The postholder is expected to engage with computational and imaging problems in such disciplines as astrophysics, fluid dynamics, oceanography, biomedicine, and material sciences as well as with research groups in the social sciences and humanities.

The Professor of Scientific Visualisation will be based in the OeRC and the opportunity to hold a faculty position in the Computing Laboratory will be offered. The person appointed will hold a non-stipendiary Fellowship at Pembroke College. A three-year Postdoctoral Research position has been allocated to this post, funded by the Oxford Centre for Collaborative Applied Mathematics (OCCAM).

The successful candidate will have a substantial international reputation, including an excellent publication record, and will have the ability to lead and motivate a research team and to secure significant research funding. The person appointed will be an effective and committed teacher and be able to contribute to the longer-term development of the subject and to its promotion both within Oxford and externally.
