Graces

Graces submitted to the Regent House on 7 July 2010

The Council submits the following Graces to the Regent House. These Graces, other than any which is withdrawn or for which a ballot is requested in accordance with the regulations for Graces of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 107), will be deemed to have been approved at 4 p.m. on Friday, 16 July 2010.

1. That the regulations for the Isaac Newton Fund, the Prendergast Fund, and the Institute of Astronomy be amended as set out in the Council’s Notice, dated 21 June 2010 (p. 1032); and that a Sheepshanks Benefaction Fund and a Longsdon Trust Fund be established in the University, to be governed by the regulations set out in the same Notice.

2. That the regulations for the Unified Administrative Service (staff of the University Offices) be amended as follows:1

Regulation 6.

By deleting from this regulation the words ‘Senior Assistant Registrary and Senior Assistant Treasurer’.

Regulations 7–11.

By renumbering these regulations as 8–12 and inserting a new Regulation 7 so as to read:

7. Appointments and reappointments to the offices of Senior Assistant Registrary and Senior Assistant Treasurer shall be made by the Standing Appointments Committee on the recommendation of an Appointing Committee, appointed by the Standing Appointments Committee, which shall consist of the Registrary (or a deputy appointed by the Registrary), the Director of the Division in which the appointment is to be made, an appropriate senior academic-related officer, a senior academic with experience and interest in what the role of the office entails, and a member of the Standing Appointments Committee in class (b).

The Standing Appointments Committee may reach their decision by circulation. Written reports of such appointments and reappointments shall be minuted at a subsequent meeting of that Committee.

3. That, on the recommendation of the General Board, the period in which the General Board are required to act under Statute D, XV, 18(a)(i) in respect of the Professorship of English be extended until 1 June 2011 or until such earlier date as the Board shall determine after consultation with the Council of the School of Arts and Humanities and the Faculty Board of English.2

4. That, on the recommendation of the General Board, the Professorship of Modern Languages be discontinued until 1 October 2014 or until such earlier date as the Board shall determine after consultation with the Council of the School of Arts and Humanities and the Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages.3

5. That, on the recommendation of the General Board, the period in which the General Board are required to act under Statute D, XV, 18(a)(i) in respect of the Herchel Smith Professorship of Organic Chemistry be extended until 1 June 2011 or until such earlier date as the Board shall determine after consultation with the Council of the School of the Physical Sciences and the Faculty Board of Physics and Chemistry.4

6. That, on the recommendation of the General Board, the period in which the General Board are required to act under Statute D, XV, 18(a)(i) in respect of the Professorship of Theoretical Geophysics be extended until 1 June 2011 or until such earlier date as the Board shall determine after consultation with the Council of the School of the Physical Sciences and the Faculty Board of Mathematics.5

7. That Regulation 1 for the Cambridge University Students Union and for the Graduate Union be amended in each case by deleting the words ‘in statu pupillari’.6

8. That the regulations for the Oliver Gatty Fund be amended as follows:7

Regulation 3.

By replacing in lines 1 and 2 the words ‘John Humphrey Plummer Professor of Cell Biology’ by the words ‘Chairman of the Wellcome/Cancer Research UK Gurdon Institute’.

Regulation 8.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

8. The Studentship shall be tenable for one, two, three or four years, as determined by the Electors; a student elected for a shorter period may have her or his studentship extended provided that the total tenure of the Studentship shall not exceed four years.

The Council has sanctioned the submission of the following Graces to the Regent House at a Congregation to be held on 17 July 2010:

That the following person be admitted to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by incorporation:

That the following person be admitted to the degree of Master of Arts by incorporation:
