Professorship of Ophthalmology: Notice

The Board of Electors to the Professorship of Ophthalmology invite applications for this Professorship from persons whose work falls within the general field of the Professorship, to take up appointment from 1 October 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter.

It is expected that the appointee will be offered an Honorary Consultant contract by Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The annual pensionable stipend for a Professor with clinical responsibilities is on a scale from £74,504 to £100,446 at a point determined by level of seniority.

University Offices

Clinical Lectureships in Adult Intensive Care Medicine, Medical Genetics, General Practice, Public Health, Health Protection, and Radiology in the School of Clinical Medicine

Applications are invited for a range of new Academic Clinical Lectureships funded by the NIHR – IAT programme. These offer an unrivalled opportunity to undertake high quality research within an outstanding academic and clinical environment. Applicants should be medically qualified, have full GMC registration, and already hold or have submitted a Ph.D./D.Phil./M.D. Degree, and be of the standing required for an appropriate honorary contract of service with the NHS East of England Deanery (Specialist Registrar/GP). The appointment will be for four years with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years, and can be taken up as soon as possible.

The salary will be on a scale from £30,685 to £53,132 a year (GP £61,859 to £80,186 a year).

NIHR Clinical Lecturer in General Practice in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care

The Department of Public Health and Primary Care (General Practice and Primary Care Research Unit) is looking for a General Practitioner with a relevant M.D. or Ph.D. Degree, who is enthusiastic to develop her or his academic career and work towards a senior clinical academic fellowship, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The post offers fully qualified GPs with a Ph.D. or M.D. Degree an opportunity to combine postdoctoral research (50%) with teaching and clinical service and apply for further fellowship funding.

The successful candidate will be supervised by Martin Roland, Professor of Health Services Research.

The Unit is one of the UK’s strongest research groupings in primary care and behavioural science, and the Health Services Research Group has strong links with the UK office of the RAND Corporation based in Cambridge.

The post is available for up to four years. The salary will be in the range of £61,859 to £80,186 a year.

NIHR Clinical Lecturer/Specialty Registrar in Public Health with interest in Health Protection in the School of Clinical Medicine

Applications are invited from candidates for this post to take up appointment as soon as possible. Applicants should have had suitable experience and training and be of the standing required for an honorary contract of service with the Suffolk PCT as a Specialty Registrar. The successful candidate will have a UK National Training Number in Public Health, and be currently completing or have completed an M.D. or Ph.D. Degree.

Candidates should have full membership of the Faculty of Public Health by examination and have completed phases 1 and 2 of the new curriculum, or otherwise be able to produce evidence of a clear plan to achieve these within the four years. The successful candidate will be required to undertake teaching and will work together with public health colleagues in the School to further build her or his academic career through developing her or his research skills and publication record, and be encouraged to actively apply for research grants.

The appointment will be for four years with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The salary will be in the range of £30,685 to £53,132 a year. Banding for out of hours duties will be available until CCT is attained.

Cambridge University Language Programme (CULP) in the Language Centre

Arabic Content Writer

Applications are invited for the short-term, unestablished, part-time post of Content Writer for a new pilot CULP course in Arabic which will be offered from summer 2010. The Language Centre currently offers taught language courses as part of the Cambridge University Language Programme (CULP) in (Mandarin) Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish.

The Arabic Content Writer will be working as part of the Language Centre’s team that delivers the language learning content for CULP courses. He or she will contribute to the design of the Arabic language modules and write the language materials for each module. The Arabic Content Writer will follow current best practice in second language pedagogy, especially with respect to the learning and teaching of Modern Standard and Levantine Arabic. He or she will work closely with the Online Course Development Team (Online Support Manager, the Head of IT, and the CULP Director) and liaise closely with other collaborators and support staff.

The role of this post is to provide the language learning content for the Arabic pilot programme. The work includes contributing to the overall module design, researching the linguistic and cultural background for each module, writing scripts for audio recordings, providing transcripts and translations, and creating appropriate language learning activities. The work also includes the provision of appropriate cultural notes and any glossary entries relating to the module content.

The post requires a first degree (or equivalent) and experience in producing language-learning materials in Arabic. The post-holder needs a good eye for detail and to be capable of producing very accurate work to tight deadlines. A qualification in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language is desirable as is some experience with editing and proofreading.

This is a short-term appointment available for a maximum of twelve months (part-time). The post-holder will be based at the University of Cambridge Language Centre. The salary will be £25,751 a year (pro-rata).

Arabic Language Teacher

The Language Centre is looking to appoint an Arabic Language Teacher for its new Arabic course which will be offered from summer 2010. The Language Centre currently offers taught language courses as part of the Cambridge University Language Programme (CULP) in (Mandarin) Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish.

The Arabic Language Teacher will be working as part of the CULP teaching team. He or she will follow current best practice in second language pedagogy, especially with respect to the learning and teaching of Modern Standard and Levantine Arabic. He or she will work closely with the CULP Director and liaise with the other CULP Teachers and support staff.

The Arabic Language Teacher will be expected to design the relevant syllabi and detailed lesson plans as well as to teach Standard Arabic language at beginners and intermediate levels to groups of up to twenty students.

Teaching of the pilot course will take place between June and July 2010. Teaching of a more formal course in CULP Arabic is scheduled to take place during the Michaelmas and Lent Terms (October to March), as well as during the Long Vacation (June to July).

The Arabic Language Teacher should be educated to degree level (or equivalent), have a good command of the English language, and have at least three years’ teaching experience. Knowledge and experience of teaching Standard Arabic to adult learners at HE level and the methodology of communicative language learning are essential. The post-holder should have good organizational and class management skills and the ability to analyse student feedback. A qualification in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language, knowledge of the principles of teaching in a multi-format environment, and a sound understanding of the cultural and political landscape of the Arab world are desirable. The post-holder should be IT literate with experience in the use of generic computer applications and multi-media equipment, as well as experience with the use of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

The Language Centre is hoping to offer Arabic courses next academical year and would wish to employ the Arabic Teacher for its delivery over Michaelmas 2010 and Lent 2011 and also during the Long Vacation term in June–July 2011. The remuneration for this post is £38.20 an hour, and limit of tenure applies.
