Department Secretary (Administrator) in the Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences is seeking to fill the post of Department Secretary (Administrator). The post-holder will be responsible for providing extensive administrative support to the Head of Department and liaison with the School of the Physical Sciences. The role includes major involvement in strategic and forward planning, reviews of the Department, key initiatives and equipment bids, and the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE, now renamed REF). The post-holder will be responsible for the overall co-ordination and effective running of the Department and for managing the financial, administrative, and HR matters relating to the Department and its staff. The post-holder will also administer the Graduate Student programme. This is a challenging and interesting position in a vibrant and world-leading Earth Sciences Department.

Applicants should be educated to degree level, preferably in a science subject, and have significant administrative experience, preferably gained in higher education. The successful applicant will have excellent organizational and managerial ability, good communication skills (both verbal and written), good interpersonal skills, judgement, and diplomacy. The applicant will need to be self-motivated, with a flexible approach to her or his work, to initiate ideas, to respond sensitively to the needs of others, and to prioritize work to meet deadlines by means of effective time management skills. Excellent IT and numeracy skills will also be needed. Experience of working with research sponsors, Research Councils, industry, the Royal Society, their policies and procedures, will be an advantage.

The appointment will be subject to the Statutes and Ordinances of the University. The post is full time and permanent, subject to the satisfactory completion of a probationary period of nine months. The salary will be in the range of £36,715 to £46,510 a year (grade 9), with the place on appointment determined according to qualifications and experience. The person appointed will be eligible to become a member of the Universities Superannuation Scheme. The post will be available from 1 August 2010.

Temporary Lectureship, Centre for Theoretical Cosmology, in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

Applications are invited for a Temporary Lectureship in Theoretical Cosmology to commence on 1 September 2010 or thereabouts, which will be known as the “CTC Lectureship”. The appointee will be expected to contribute significantly to an ongoing research programme in Theoretical Cosmology described in the further particulars and there will be a lighter teaching load than expected for a standard academic post.

The appointment will be made at an appropriate point on the scale for University Lecturers (£36,715 to £46,510 a year) and the limit of tenure for this post is four years.

Mellon Teaching Fellow in Science, Medicine, and Society in Africa in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science

The Centre of African Studies and the Department of History and Philosophy of Science invite applications for a two-year Mellon Post-doctoral Fellowship in Science, Medicine, and Society in Africa. Ideal applicants will have gained a Ph.D. Degree (or equivalent) within the last five years or by the time of the appointment, in disciplines within the humanities and social sciences.

The salary will be in the range of £27,319 to £35,646 a year. The limit of tenure for this post is 30 September 2012. Mellon Post-doctoral Fellow in Social Justice and Criminal Justice in the Faculty of Philosophy

The Faculties of Philosophy and Law wish to appoint a Mellon Post-doctoral Fellow in Social Justice and Criminal Justice for two years from 1 October 2010. This is a collaborative project across the two Faculties, with the Faculty of Philosophy as the lead institution.

This post presents an excellent opportunity for an outstanding early career researcher to gain substantial research and teaching experience within prestigious Philosophy and Law departments.

Research speciality must be in at least one of the following areas: political philosophy, philosophy of law. Ability to teach at undergraduate and graduate level in political philosophy or philosophy of law is also essential. There may be opportunities to teach in other areas in addition.

The Fellowship provides specific opportunities to enhance and develop existing courses. It also provides an initiative for collaborative research on urgent questions of criminal justice, social justice, and individual responsibility.

The person appointed will be required to provide up to six hours of lectures/seminars a week during term time, to supervise graduate students, and to examine at both undergraduate and graduate level. The salary will be in the range of £27,319 to £35,646 a year. The limit of tenure for this post is 30 September 2012.

It is regretted that in the notice published on 10 February 2010 (Reporter, p. 535), the date of Professor Cane’s election to the Arthur Goodhart Visiting Professorship of Legal Science was incorrect. The notice should read as follows:
