The
Council submits the following Graces to the Regent House. These Graces, unless they are
withdrawn or a ballot is requested in accordance with the regulations for Graces of the
Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 111), will be deemed to have been approved at
4 p.m. on Friday, 2 May 2025. Further information on requests for a ballot or the amendment
of Graces is available to members of the Regent House on the Regent House Petitions site.§
1. That, on the recommendation of the General Board, a Kidani Professorship of Integrated Cancer Medicine be established for a single tenure from 1 October 2025, placed in the Schedule to Special Ordinance C (vii) 1, and assigned to the Department of Oncology and, from the date of receipt of the agreed donation in full, the Professorship be established in perpetuity.1, 2
2. That a Kidani Integrated Cancer Medicine Fund be established in the University, to be governed by the following regulations: 1, 2
1. The benefaction received from the Kidani Memorial Trust, together with such other sums as may be received or applied for the same purpose, shall form an endowment fund called the Kidani Integrated Cancer Medicine Fund to advance research in the field of integrated cancer medicine by supporting a Kidani Professorship of Integrated Cancer Medicine.
2. The Managers shall be responsible for the administration of the Fund and the application of its income and shall comprise the Head of the School of Clinical Medicine, the Head of the Department of Oncology and one person appointed by the Council of the School of Clinical Medicine for such period as the Council shall determine,[1] one of whom shall be appointed Chair by the Council.
3. Subject to Regulation 4, the income of the Fund shall be applied towards the payment of the stipend, national insurance, pension contributions, and associated indirect costs of the Professorship payable by the University.
4. Any unexpended income in any financial year, including income accrued during a vacancy in the Professorship, may, at the discretion of the Managers:
(a)be applied to support the work of the Professor;
(b)with the approval of the Council of the School of Clinical Medicine, be applied to support research in the field of cancer medicine in the University in such manner as may be recommended by the Managers; and/or
(c)be carried forward for use as income in accordance with
Regulation 3 in any one or more subsequent financial years.
[1] The Council of the School of Clinical Medicine has determined that the person appointed will be the Director of the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute ex officio until further notice.
3. That, on the recommendation of the General Board, a Childers Professorship of Irish History be established in perpetuity from 1 October 2025, placed in the Schedule to Special Ordinance C (vii) 1, and assigned to the Faculty of History.1, 3
4. That a Childers Irish History Fund be established in the University, to be governed by the following regulations:1, 3
1. The funds received from the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ireland, together with such other sums as may be received or applied for the same purpose, shall form an endowment fund called the Childers Irish History Fund to advance research in the field of Irish history by supporting a Professorship of Irish History.
2. The Managers shall be responsible for the administration of the Fund and the application of its income and shall comprise three members of the Faculty Board of History appointed by the Faculty Board of History for such period as the Board shall determine, one of whom shall be appointed Chair by the Board.
3. Subject to Regulation 4, the income of the Fund shall be applied towards the payment of the stipend, national insurance, pension contributions, and associated indirect costs of the Professorship payable by the University.
4. Any unexpended income in any financial year, including income accrued during a vacancy in the Professorship, may, at the discretion of the Managers:
(a)be applied to support the work of the Professor;
(b)with the approval of the School Council, be applied to support teaching and research in the field of Irish history in the University in such manner as may be recommended by the Managers; and/or
(c)be carried forward for use as income in accordance with Regulation 3 in any one or more subsequent financial years.
5. That, on the recommendation of the General Board, a Professorship of Economic History be established in perpetuity from 1 September 2026, placed in the Schedule to Special Ordinance C (vii) 1, and assigned to the Faculty of Economics.4
6. That a Saich-Powney Studentship Fund be established in the University, to be governed by the following regulations:1
1. The bequest received from the estate of Beryl Pamela Saich, together with such other sums as may be received or applied for the same purpose, shall form an endowment fund called the Saich‑Powney Studentship Fund to provide studentships to postgraduate students studying climate change solutions unrelated to fossil fuels in the University.
2. The Managers shall be responsible for the administration of the Fund and the application of its income and shall comprise the Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics who shall be Chair and two members of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics appointed by the Faculty Board of Mathematics, who shall serve for such period as the Faculty Board shall determine.[1]
3. Subject to Regulation 4, the income of the Fund shall be used to provide awards, which shall be called the Saich-Powney Studentships. In order to be eligible for a Studentship a candidate must have been admitted, or be seeking admission, as a postgraduate registered student for research towards the Ph.D. Degree on climate change solutions unrelated to fossil fuels in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics.[2] Arrangements for awards, including the number, tenure and conditions of Studentships to be awarded in any given year, the expenses to be covered by an award, and the form of the application and selection processes, shall be at the discretion of the Managers and may provide for the financial circumstances of candidates to be taken into consideration.
4. Any unexpended income in any financial year, including income accrued during any years in which the Studentships are not awarded, may, at the discretion of the Managers:
(a)be awarded to support the work of holder(s) of the Studentships;
(b)be carried forward for use as income in accordance with
Regulation 3 in any one or more subsequent financial years.
[1] The Faculty Board has agreed that one of the two members shall be the Director of the Centre for Climate Repair ex officio until further notice.
[2] The Managers have agreed that the Studentships shall be awarded to students affiliated to the Centre for Climate Repair in the Department or a successor entity until such time as the Centre or successor entity ceases to exist.
7. That The Cai Meijie Ph.D. Scholarship Fund be established in the University, to be governed by the following regulations:1
1. The benefaction received from Ms Meijie Cai, together with such other sums as may be received or applied for the same purpose, shall form an endowment fund called The Cai Meijie Ph.D. Scholarship Fund to support Ph.D. students at the Judge Institute of Management.
2. The Managers shall be responsible for the administration of the Fund and the application of its income and shall comprise:
(a)the Director of Judge Business School who shall be Chair;
(b)two members of the Faculty of Business and Management appointed by the Faculty Board of Business and Management, who shall serve for such period as the Faculty Board shall determine.
3. Subject to Regulation 4, the income of the Fund shall be used to provide awards, which shall be called The Cai Meijie Ph.D. Scholarship Arrangements for awards, including the number, tenure and conditions of the Scholarships to be awarded in any given year, the expenses to be covered by an award, and the form of the application and selection processes, shall be at the discretion of the Managers and may provide for applications by persons who are not yet members of the University and for the financial circumstances of candidates to be taken into consideration.
4. Any unexpended income in any financial year, including income accrued during any years in which the Scholarships are not awarded, may, at the discretion of the Managers:
(a)be awarded to support the work of the holder(s) of the Scholarships;
(b)with the approval of the School Council, be applied to support research in the field of Business and Management in the University in such manner as may be recommended by the Managers;
(c)be carried forward for use as income in accordance with Regulation 3 in any one or more subsequent financial years.
8. That a Neubauer Mathematics Fund be established in the University, to be governed by the following regulations:1
1. The benefaction received from Eirion Andrew Charles Neubauer, together with such other sums as may be received or applied for the same purpose, shall form an endowment fund called the Neubauer Mathematics Fund to support Ph.D. students studying in any area of the mathematical sciences (including pure mathematics, mathematical statistics, applied mathematics and theoretical physics, excluding string theory) in the University.
2. The Managers shall be responsible for the administration of the Fund and the application of its income and shall comprise:
(a)the Head of the School of the Physical Sciences who shall be Chair;
(b)the Head of the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics; and
(c)the Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics.
3. Subject to Regulation 4, the income of the Fund shall be used to provide awards, which shall be called the Neubauer Scholarships. Arrangements for awards, including the number, tenure and conditions of the Scholarships to be awarded in any given year, the expenses to be covered by an award, and the form of the application and selection processes, shall be at the discretion of the Managers and may provide for applications by persons who are not yet members of the University and for the financial circumstances of candidates to be taken into consideration.
4. Any unexpended income in any financial year, including income accrued during any years in which the Scholarships are not awarded, may, at the discretion of the Managers:
(a)be awarded to support the work of the holder(s) of the Scholarships; or
(b)be carried forward for use as income in accordance with Regulation 3 in any one or more subsequent financial years.
9. That the amendments to the Ordinances for Entries and Lists of Candidates for Examinations (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 256) and for the Dates of Examinations (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 259), as set out in the Annex to the General Board’s Notice dated 17 April 2025 (p. 499), be approved.
10. That the Professorship of Linguistics (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 714) be retitled the Professorship of Theoretical Linguistics.5
11. That with effect from 1 October 2025, the following Professorships, currently assigned to the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics, be assigned to the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics:6,7
