Graces

Graces submitted to the Regent House on 26 February 2025

The Council submits the following Graces to the Regent House. These Graces, unless they are withdrawn or a ballot is requested in accordance with the regulations for Graces of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 111), will be deemed to have been approved at 4 p.m. on Friday, 7 March 2025. Further information on requests for a ballot or the amendment of Graces is available to members of the Regent House on the Regent House Petitions site.§

1. That a Cambridge University Musical Society (CUMS) Fund be established in the University, to be governed by the following regulations:1

Cambridge University Musical Society (CUMS) Fund

1. The funds received from the Cambridge University Musical Society (CUMS) Fund, together with such other sums as may be received or applied for the same purpose, shall form an endowment fund to promote and advance musical education and musical performance within the University and City of Cambridge and elsewhere in any manner which now is or may in the future be deemed to be charitable. The Fund shall be called the Cambridge University Musical Society (CUMS) Fund.

2. The Managers shall be responsible for the administration of the Fund and the application of its income and shall comprise three members of the Regent House appointed by the General Board.[1]

3. Subject to Regulation 4, the income of the Fund shall be applied in accordance with Regulation 1 in such manner as the Managers think fit, after having regard to a preference for Western classical music.

4. Any unexpended income in any financial year may, at the discretion of the Managers:

(a)with the approval of the General Board,[1] be applied to support music performance and musical education in such manner as may be recommended by the Managers; and/or

(b)be carried forward for use as income in accordance with Regulation 3 in any one or more subsequent financial years.

5. In the event that it is not possible to apply the income of the Fund in accordance with Regulation 1, the University may transfer the capital and income of the Fund to such other charity for the promotion and advancement of musical education and music performance in the United Kingdom as it sees fit.

[1] The General Board has agreed to delegate the appointment of the Managers and the approval of the use of unexpended income under Regulation 4(c) to the Music Performance Committee until further notice. The Managers may include the Director of the Centre for Music Performance and members of the Music Performance Committee.

2. That Regulation 2 for the Grace and Thomas C. H. Chan Scholarship Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, 2024, p. 808) be amended to read as follows:2

2. The Managers of the Fund shall be the General Board, which shall be responsible for the administration of the Fund.[1]

[1] The General Board has delegated its responsibilities for the Fund to the Education Services Scholarships Committee.

3. That Regulation 11 for the Robert Gardiner Memorial Scholarships (Statutes and Ordinances, 2024, p. 849) be amended to read as follows:3

11. The Electors shall determine the manner and timing of payment of the Scholarship and may withhold any instalment if they are not satisfied with the diligence or progress of a Scholar.

4. That Regulation 2 for the Winifred Georgina Holgate Pollard Memorial Prizes (Statutes and Ordinances, 2024, p. 876) be amended to read as follows:2

2. The Managers of the Fund shall be the General Board, which shall be responsible for the administration of the Fund.[1]

[1] The General Board has delegated its responsibilities for the Fund to the Education Services Scholarships Committee.

5. That Regulation 6 for the Schiff Foundation (Statutes and Ordinances, 2024, p. 974) be amended to read as follows:3

6. The Managers shall determine the manner and timing of payment of the stipend, provided that the Managers may withhold any instalment if they are not satisfied that the Student is pursuing their research with sufficient diligence.

The Council has sanctioned the submission of the following Graces to the Regent House at a Congregation to be held on 1 March 2025.

That the following person be admitted to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by incorporation:

1. Iza Kavedžija, Fellow of Robinson College, University Associate Professor in the Department of Social Anthropology, Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Oxford (2013).

That the following person be admitted to the degree of Master of Arts by incorporation:
