Stipends of the holders of clinical academic offices and payment for clinical responsibility from 1 April 2023 and 1 April 2024

17 January 2025

In May and November 2024, the General Board published information on the salary arrangements agreed for clinical academic staff with effect from 1 April 2023 and 1 April 2024 respectively (Reporter, 2023–24: 6741, p. 577; 2024–25: 6759, p. 115). Following a recent meeting of the Board of the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA), UCEA’s Clinical Academic Staff Salaries Committee has agreed to translate the award of the Review Body on Doctors’ and Dentists’ Remuneration into the salaries of clinical academic staff.

Pay for 2023–24

The government will invest an average of a further 4.05% into 2023–24 pay scales for junior doctors. This means that the 2023–24 pay scales will be on average 13.2% higher than in 2022–23 – an improvement of 4.4 percentage points from the current 2023–24 pay scales.

Uplifts will be applied to the pay scales for the 2016 and 2002 contracts as well as to local pay scales that mirror those contracts.

The effective date for the changes is 1 April 2023.

Pay for 2024–25

The government will accept the recommendations of the Review Body on Doctors’ and Dentists’ Remuneration of a 6% uplift plus £1,000, on a consolidated basis, with an effective date of 1 April 2024.

The figures currently shown in Schedule II to the Ordinance for Stipends (Statutes and Ordinances, 2024, p. 686) are replaced with effect from 1 April 2023 and are as follows:

For Clinical Lecturers on the equivalent of the NHS new 2016 pay system:
Clinical Lecturer £33,600 by five nodal points to £65,495

For Clinical Lecturers on the equivalent of the NHS Specialist Registrar scales (pre-2009):

University Associate Professor (Grade 10)/Professor (Grade 11) (Senior Lecturer/Reader) scale £63,410 by six increments to £89,163

These uplifts are then replaced with effect from 1 April 2024 and are as follows:
