Notices by Faculty Boards, or other bodies concerned, of changes to the form and conduct of certain examinations to be held in 2017–18, by comparison with those examinations in 2016–17, are published below. Complete details of the form and conduct of all examinations are available from the Faculties or Departments concerned.
The form and conduct notice published on 22 November 2017 entitled ‘Theological and Religious Studies Tripos, 2018’ (Reporter, 6485, 2017–18, p. 128) includes information for candidates of the Theology, Religion, and Philosophy of Religion Tripos, which should have been referenced in the notice title.
The Theological and Religious Studies Tripos was renamed the ‘Theology, Religion, and Philosophy of Religion Tripos’ with effect from 1 October 2017 but candidates who started the course prior to that date will continue to take papers under the previous title. The form and conduct information published on 22 November therefore relates to papers offered under both Tripos titles.
The Faculty Board of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies gives notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2018, the form of certain papers for the examination in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies for the degree of Master of Philosophy will be as specified below. The examination for each paper listed will take place in the Easter Term in the year of study.
This three-hour examination consists of two texts for translation and answering one essay question from a choice of three.
This three-hour examination tests the various skills the candidate has learned in the field of editing Genizah poetry. It consists of a practical exercise in which the candidate is asked to edit a short, unseen poetic text on the basis of a number of Genizah fragments, images of which will be provided.
This three-hour examination consists of four passages of translation. For each text, the candidate is asked to comment on specific aspects of each passage. Candidates are allowed to use copies of the lexical reference tools provided.
This three-hour examination tests various aspects of basic Arabic morphology and syntax. The candidate is asked to produce grammatical paradigms (nouns and verbs), analyze specific syntactic constructions, and translate sentences from Arabic to Hebrew.
