Regulations for examinations

Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 256)

With effect from 1 October 2014

The regulations for the Tripos have been amended so as to list the ten papers that may be borrowed from Part I of the Tripos (as provided for by Regulations 16(a) and 16(b)) as papers in Part II; so as to include Paper 18 in the list of papers from which candidates may only offer one; and to clarify the fact that no candidate may offer a subject that he or she has already offered in any previous Honours Examination. Regulation 16 has also been clarified so as to reflect the fact that candidates having previously taken Part I of the Tripos, with effect from 1 October 2014, may no longer present themselves as candidates for Part II over two years (Regulation 3).

Regulation 14.

By inserting additional paper numbers to read as follows:

Paper 19.

England before the Norman Conquest. (Paper 1 of Part I of the Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic Tripos).

Paper 20.

Scandinavian History in the Viking Age. (Paper 2 of Part I of the Anglo- Saxon, Norse, and Celtic Tripos).

Paper 24.

Old Norse language and literature. (Paper 6 of Part I of the Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic Tripos. Also serves as Paper 8B of Part I and Paper 27A of Part II of the English Tripos (New Regulations)).

Paper 25.

Medieval Welsh language and literature. (Paper 7 of Part I of the Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic Tripos. Also serves as Paper 8C of Part I and Paper 28A of Part II of the English Tripos (New Regulations)).

Paper 26.

Medieval Irish language and literature. (Paper 8 of Part I of the Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic Tripos. Also serves as Paper 8D of Part I and Paper 29A of Part II of the English Tripos (New Regulations)).

Paper 27.

Insular Latin language and literature. (Paper 9 of Part I of the Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic Tripos. Also serves as Paper 8E of Part I and Paper 30 of Part II of the English Tripos (New Regulations)).

Paper 28.

Palaeography and codicology. (Paper 10 of Part I of the Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic Tripos).

Regulation 15.

By amending sub-section (a) and clause (i) of the sub-section so as to read:

(a) four of Papers 1–18, provided that:

(i) a candidate may not offer more than one paper chosen from among Papers 13–18;

And by amending clause (iv) of sub-section (a) so as to read:

(iv) no candidate shall offer a subject which he or she has previously offered in any other Honours examination.

Regulation 16.

By removing the reference to Part I papers from the regulation, and amending the regulation so as to read:

16. (a) A candidate for Part II who takes the examination in the year next after obtaining honours in Part I of the Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic Tripos or in another Honours Examination may offer in place of one of the papers required under Regulation 15(a) one paper chosen from among Papers 19–28;

(b) candidates for Part II who take the examination in the year next but one after obtaining honours in another Honours Examination may offer in place of up to two of the papers required under Regulation 15(a) papers chosen from among Papers 23–27;

provided that:

(i) a candidate may not offer a paper that he or she has previously offered in another Honours Examination;

(ii) a candidate may not offer any of the following combinations of papers:

Paper 5 together with Paper 23;

Paper 6 together with Paper 24;

Paper 7 together with Paper 25;

Paper 8 together with Paper 26;

Paper 9 together with Paper 27.

The Faculty Board of English have confirmed that no candidate’s preparation for the examination in 2015 will be affected by this change.

Archaeological and Anthropological Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 260)

With effect from 1 October 2014

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Human, Social, and Political Science, have approved changes to the scheme of the examination for Part IIa and Part IIb so as to: change the title of an Archaeology paper; and permit Part IIb candidates to offer additional papers (A21–A23) under paragraph (iii) of Option 2 (Assyriology).

Regulation 15.

By amending the title of paper A26 from ‘Europe in the first millennium ad II: Scandinavian archaeology’ to ‘The Long Viking Age’. The paper also serves as Paper 15 of Part I and Paper 17 of Part II of the Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic Tripos.

Regulation 17.

By amending Option 2 (Assyriology) so as to read:

Option 2 (Assyriology)

(i)

Paper M21 or M1;

(ii)

Paper A23 or A24;

(iii)

two papers chosen from A4, A21–22, M3,2 M4–5;

(iv)

either one further paper chosen from A4, A21–22, M3,3 M4–5, or a dissertation on a subject approved by the Faculty Board, which shall be submitted in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 20.

English Tripos (New Regulations), Part II

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 329)

With effect from 1 October 2014

The New Regulations for the Tripos have been amended so as to replace the existing Group B papers 7 and 8 ‘English Literature 1500–1547’ and ‘Literature, culture, and crisis, 1631–1671’ with two new papers.

Regulation 18.

GROUP B

Paper 7.

English Literature 1500–1547

By amending the title to ‘Early modern drama, 1588–1642’.

Paper 8.

Literature, culture, and crisis, 1631–1671

By amending the title to ‘Material Renaissance.’

The Faculty Board of English have confirmed that no candidate’s preparation for the examination in 2015 will be adversely affected by this change.

Historical Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 341)

With effect from 1 October 2014

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of History, have approved changes to the scheme of examination for Part II of the Historical Tripos so as to: introduce a new paper under Section C of Regulation 15; add a new supplementary regulation; and correct an earlier amendment to Regulation 16, which inadvertently removed the requirement to take a paper on a subject in European History and retained the requirement to take a post-1750 paper.

Regulation 15.

By adding a new Part II paper under Section C, Political Thought, as follows:

Paper 6.

States between states: The history of international political thought from the Roman empire to the early nineteenth century

By replacing the reference to ‘Papers 6–30’ in Section D, Specified Subjects, with ‘Papers 7–30’.

Regulation 16.

(i)By replacing in line 15 of proviso (vii) the reference to ‘Papers 6–30’ with reference to ‘Papers 7–30’.

(ii)By removing proviso (viii) and replacing with new proviso (viii) as follows:

(viii)a candidate who has previously obtained honours in Part I of the Historical Tripos but who did not offer in that Part a paper from among Papers 12–18 shall offer in Part II a paper from Section D on a subject in European history specified by the Faculty Board.

Supplementary Regulations

Part II.

By inserting a new supplementary regulation for new Paper 6 as follows:

Paper 6. States between states: The history of international political thought from the Roman empire to the early nineteenth century

This paper will explore the history of European thinking about polities in relation to other polities from the Roman empire to the early nineteenth century. It considers a wide range of source texts from different historical contexts and examines the manifold and complex ways in which the ‘international’ arena of politics was theorized in different periods. Candidates will be required to answer three questions.

The Faculty Board of History have confirmed that no candidate’s preparation for the examination in 2014 will be adversely affected by these changes.

Human, Social, and Political Sciences Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 348)

With effect from 1 October 2014

The General Board, at the request of the HSPS Tripos Management Committee and on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Human, Social, and Political Science, have approved changes to: amend the titles and content of two papers and suspend a single paper in Part II; correct the listing of papers that can be borrowed from History and Philosophy of Science; amend Regulation 18 to limit candidates from changing tracks between Parts IIa and IIb; and insert a new footnote in Regulations 18(j) and 18(k) with reference to Paper SAN7.

Regulation 15.

By amending the title of paper ARC26 from ‘Europe in the first millennium ad I Anglo-Saxon archaeology’ to ‘The North Sea in the Early Middle Ages’.

By amending the title of paper ARC27 from ‘Europe in the first millennium ad II Scandinavian archaeology’ to ‘Europe in Late Antiquity and the Migration Period’.

By inserting a footnote against Paper POL6 to read ‘This paper is suspended until further notice.’

Regulation 17.

By replacing the reference to ‘Papers 1 and 2’ throughout Regulation 17 with ‘Paper 1 or Paper 2’.

Regulation 18.

By inserting at the beginning of Regulation 18 the following text:

Candidates for Part IIb who have taken Part IIa in the Human, Social, and Political Sciences Tripos may not change their subject track between Parts IIa and IIb, unless changing from a joint track to one of the single subjects within it.

By amending Regulations 18(j) and 18(k) so as to read:

(j) Candidates in Sociology and Social Anthropology

(i)two papers chosen from SOC5–15;

(ii)one paper chosen from SAN5 and SAN6, and one paper chosen from SAN5–SAN121;

(iii)a candidate may substitute for one paper a dissertation on a subject approved by the Head of the Department of Sociology, which shall be submitted in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 20.

(k) Candidates in Social Anthropology and Politics

(i)two papers from POL10–192;

(ii)one paper chosen from SAN5 and SAN6, and one paper chosen from SAN5–SAN123;

(iii)a candidate may substitute for one paper a dissertation on a subject approved by the Head of the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology, which shall be submitted in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 20.

Law Tripos: Amendment

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 361)

With effect from 1 October 2014

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Law, have approved amendments to the Tripos so as to introduce one full paper into Group IV. Paper 48, ‘Prescribed subjects’, will no longer include a half-paper on Competition law.

Regulation 16, Group IV.

By inserting ‘Paper 27. Competition law’.

The Faculty Board of Law are satisfied that no candidate’s preparation for the examination in 2015 will be adversely affected by the change.

Linguistics Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 364)

With effect from 1 October 2014

The list of papers that may be taken in Parts IIa and IIb of the Tripos has been amended, and a footnote has been introduced so as to debar candidates who offer Paper 8 ‘Phonology and morphology’ for examination in the Linguistics Tripos, Part IIa, in 2014 from offering either Paper 7, ‘Phonological theory’, or Paper 8, ‘Morphology’, for examination in Part IIb in 2015.

Regulation 12.

Section C

Paper 7.

A subject in linguistics to be specified by the Faculty Board from time to time (also serves as Paper Li. 7 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos)

By removing the current footnote suspending the paper and amending the title to ‘Phonological theory’; and by inserting a new footnote so as to read ‘no candidate who offered Paper 8 ‘Phonology and morphology’ for examination in the Linguistics Tripos, Part IIa, in 2014 shall offer either Paper 7 or Paper 8 for examination in Part IIb in 2015’.

Paper 8.

Phonology and morphology (also serves as Paper Li.8 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos)

By amending the title to ‘Morphology’; and by inserting a footnote so as to read ‘no candidate who offered Paper 8 ‘Phonology and morphology’ for examination in the Linguistics Tripos, Part IIa, in 2014 shall offer either Paper 7 or Paper 8 for examination in Part IIb in 2015’.

Paper 11.

Historical linguistics (also serves as Paper 15(a) of Part II of the Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic Tripos, as Paper 43A of Part II of the English Tripos (New Regulations), and as Paper Li.11 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos)

By suspending the paper in 2014–15 and in each alternate year thereafter.

Paper 13.

History of the English language (also serves as Paper 15(b) of Part II of the Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic Tripos, as Paper 43B of Part II of the English Tripos (New Regulations), and as Paper Li.13 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos)

By suspending the paper in 2014–15 and in each alternate year thereafter.

Paper 14.

History of the French language (also serves as Paper Li.14 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos)

By suspending the paper in both 2014–15 and 2015–16; and in each alternate year thereafter.

Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 378)

With effect from 1 October 2014

The study of Russian and Ukrainian language and culture within the Tripos has been extended to include Polish language and culture. Accordingly, the Schedule of available papers in Part Ia has been amended so as to allow candidates to be examined in Polish and Ukrainian, as well as in Russian.

In Parts Ib and II, the teaching and examination of Slavonic language and culture has been expanded on a similar basis; Ibero-Lusophone studies more broadly have been introduced; certain papers in Belgian and Dutch literature, history, and culture have been suspended; and amendments have been made to the papers offered in Italian and Linguistics. Consequently the Schedule of papers that may be taken in Parts Ib and II of the Tripos has been amended so as to: introduce a new paper in, and include a section on, Ibero-Lusophone studies; make amendments to the range of papers on offer in Dutch and in Linguistics; and to extend the teaching and examination of Russian and Ukrainian language and culture by introducing a new paper on Polish language, literature, and culture. Current sections in Schedule B entitled ‘Russian’ and ‘Ukrainian’ will therefore be replaced with a section headed ‘Slavonic Studies’.

Regulation 18(a).

By adding Polish and Ukrainian to the list of languages for which papers shall be set and oral examinations held.

Politics, Psychology, and Sociology Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 416)

With effect from 1 October 2014

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Human, Social, and Political Science, have approved changes to the regulations for Part II by inserting a footnote so as to prevent students on the Politics track from taking both papers Pol. 2 and Pol. 15.

Regulation 17(a).

By attaching the following footnote to Paper 15:

Pol. 15 may not be taken if a candidate took Pol. 2 at Part IIa.

Master of Studies

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 544)

With immediate effect

The General Board, with the concurrence of the Strategic Committee of the Institute of Continuing Education, have approved an amendment to the General Regulations for the Master of Studies to affirm that no student shall be a candidate for the M.St. Degree on more than one occasion.

By inserting the following as the final sentence of Regulation 3:

No student shall be a candidate for the M.St. Degree on more than one occasion.

Examination in Jewish-Christian Relations for the degree of Master of Studies

With effect from 1 October 2014

The General Board, at the request of the Faculty Board of Divinity, have approved a proposal that Jewish-Christian Relations be withdrawn as a subject for postgraduate study for the M.St. Degree and the special regulations for the subject (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 551) rescinded.
