Digital Library Developer in the University Library

Salary: £32,620–£43,840 a year.

Cambridge University Library is seeking to appoint an experienced Java developer to work on its Foundations digital library project for 2.5 years from early 2011. The Foundations project is a strategic initiative of the Library, which aims to establish a state-of-the-art infrastructure for the production, preservation, and online delivery of digitized content from its world-class collections.

Working within a core team of three, the appointee will lead development work for the project, adapting and developing software to support all aspects of the digital library infrastructure. An open source environment is envisaged for this project, so the appointee would be selecting and adapting existing open source tools, contributing code, and developing new tools as required. The project will provide an opportunity for the appointee to work at the forefront of digital library and digital humanities initiatives.

Applicants should have a good honours degree in Computer Science or a related field, and considerable experience of leading and delivering successful software development within contexts relevant to the project. Java and SQL experience is essential and experience with the JavaServer Faces framework and Lucene/Solr is desirable. In addition to excellent technical skills, we seek applicants with strong project management and communication skills, able to translate the vision and requirements of non-technical stakeholders into a clear programme of work.

Informal enquiries are welcomed by Grant Young, Digitization and Digital Preservation Specialist (tel. 01223 765576), or Patricia Killiard, Head of Electronic Services and Systems (tel. 01223 333037).

Further particulars and an application form can be downloaded from the Library website at http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/Vacancies/, or are available from the Librarian’s Personal Assistant, Cambridge University Library, West Road, Cambridge, CB3 9DR (tel. 01223 333045, email cr267@cam.ac.uk).

Applications should include a curriculum vitae and covering letter, contact details for three professional referees, and a completed CHRIS/6 form, and should be sent to the Personnel Officer not later than 12 noon on Monday, 14 February, either by post to the above address, or electronically to cr267@cam.ac.uk (but not both).

Digital Library Systems Manager and Developer in the University Library

Salary: £32,620–£43,840 a year.

Cambridge University Library is seeking to appoint an experienced systems manager to work on its Foundations digital library project for 2.5 years from early 2011. The Foundations project is a strategic initiative of the Library, which aims to establish a state-of-the-art infrastructure for the production, preservation, and online delivery of digitized content from its world-class collections.

Working within a core team of three, the appointee will be responsible for managing the systems required to underpin all aspects of the digital library infrastructure. The appointee will undertake procurement of system hardware, installation and configuration of software, system maintenance and security, and the provision of first-line support. The appointee may also contribute to development work within the project, depending on her or his skills and the needs of the project. It is likely that such work would be focused on achieving interoperability between various systems within the Library’s infrastructure, such as the library management system or institutional repository. The project will provide an opportunity for the appointee to work at the forefront of digital library and digital humanities initiatives.

Applicants should have a good honours degree in Computer Science or a related field, and considerable expertise in Unix/Linux systems administration, large-scale storage systems, and network security. Experience in Java development and the JavaServer Faces framework is an advantage. In addition to excellent technical skills, we seek applicants with strong interpersonal skills, able to translate the vision and requirements of non-technical stakeholders into a suitable technical architecture, and provide support to systems users.

Informal enquiries are welcomed by Grant Young, Digitization and Digital Preservation Specialist (tel. 01223 765576) or Patricia Killiard, Head of Electronic Services and Systems (tel. 01223 333037).
