Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education

RESEARCH STUDENTSHIPS IN EDUCATION

Fully-funded Research Studentships are offered in the Faculty of Education and Social Sciences. Studentships are available for up to three years, and are renewable subject to satisfactory progress. The awards are worth £5,500 a year, plus payment of tuition fees, with opportunities for supplementary income through negotiated duties. Applicants should have a good honours degree or a Master's degree in a relevant subject, and will register for a research degree.

Opportunities are available in the following areas:

(i) Education: research proposals on equity/social justice/inclusion in education, including higher education will be considered. A further £1,000 bursary from the Society for Promoting the Training of Women (SPTW) will be available for women using their archives (held at Girton College, Cambridge), supporting, for example, research into (a) the promotion of women in the crafts of the commercial world; (b) apprenticeships and technical training in classrooms; (c) the women who established SPTW in 1859 and the women they helped. The first supervisor will be Professor Mary Fuller, and in the case of the SPTW bursary, Dr Pam Hirsch of the University of Cambridge will supervise the archival research (for informal enquiries, please e-mail Dr Hirsch at ph211@cus.cam.ac.uk). The closing date is 7 July 2000 and the starting date is 1 October 2000.

(ii) Special educational needs: dyslexia, dyspraxia, aspergers, or AD/HD. The closing date is 7 July 2000 and the starting date is 1 October 2000.

(iii) Science education: scientific understanding of environmental issues (although other science education topics will be considered). The closing date is 7 July 2000 and the starting date is January 2001.
