Magdalene College

PECKARD BICENTENARY CELEBRATIONS

On Tuesday, 2 December 1997, the College will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the death of Peter Peckard D.D. (Master, 1781-1797), one of its principal benefactors, and the initiator of the British campaign against the Atlantic Slave Trade. There will be an exhibition in the Parlour (in First Court) from 3.45 p.m. to 4.45 p.m.; tea will be served in the College Bar (C First Court) between 4.30 p.m. and 5 p.m. At 5 p.m. there will be a joint lecture in Benson Hall (via A First Court), Peter Peckard: Anti-Slave Trade campaigner and liberal Churchman, the speakers being Dr J. D. Walsh (Fellow and sometime President of Jesus College, Oxford, and formerly Fellow of Magdalene), and Dr R. Hyam (President of the College). At 6.30 p.m. there will be a service of Choral Evensong and Commemoration in the College Chapel, with music by Tippett, Dyson, S. Wesley, and J. S. Bach; the preacher will be the Bishop of Coventry, the Rt Rev. Simon Barrington-Ward. Members of the University will be most welcome at any or all of these events.
