Notices by the General Board

Establishment of a Hong Kong Jockey Club Professorship of Global Health

The General Board has agreed to propose the establishment in perpetuity of a Hong Kong Jockey Club Professorship of Global Health from 1 March 2024, assigned to the Department of Medicine. The Professorship will be fully funded by a gift of HK$40,817,225 (approx. £4.2m) to be held as an endowment on trust by the University (see the Vice-Chancellor’s Notice, p. 225). The supporting case for the Professorship was approved by the Resource Management Committee on 15 November 2023.

The Professorship of Global Health will have an excellent track record in an area of global health research most likely related to infectious diseases, vaccinology or human immunity. The Professor will be expected to develop a research programme of international standing and have oversight of global health operations within the Department of Medicine, supporting this work and helping to build collaborations with other investigators across the University. The officeholder will have a particular role in supporting global health research in and of relevance to Hong Kong. This will include coordinating the University’s contribution to the proposed Global Health Institute in Hong Kong, a collaboration between the University, the International Vaccines Institute and Hong Kong University. In addition, the Professor will have a role in graduate education in Cambridge, also supporting educational outreach and capacity building. The office has been funded at a level that will allow the appointment of a clinical or non-clinical academic.

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Council of the School of Clinical Medicine and the Department of Medicine, has agreed that the candidature shall be open to all persons whose work falls within the general field of the title of the office.

The Council is submitting Grace (Grace 2, p. 231) for the approval of the establishment of the Professorship in perpetuity.

Establishment of a Professorship of the Public Understanding of Mathematics

The General Board, on the recommendation of the School of the Physical Sciences, seeks approval for the establishment in perpetuity of a Professorship of the Public Understanding of Mathematics from 1 March 2024 in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. The supporting case for the Professorship was approved by the Chair of the Resource Management Committee by Chair’s action on 22 December 2023.

The full costs of the Professorship will be met from a combination of recurrent Chest income and other existing resources available to the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP). The Faculty of Mathematics has a long-standing commitment to Mathematics outreach and communication to the general public. This commitment is motivated by the desire not only to widen participation in academic study and research by traditionally under-represented groups, but also to increase mathematical understanding among the general public. A key aspect of this activity is the Millennium Mathematics Project (MMP) within DAMTP. A recent external review into the future of this initiative recommended to the Department that the MMP should be relaunched as a centre of excellence of mathematics education, communication and public education. This relaunch therefore provides an exciting opportunity to recruit a high-profile candidate with experience in public communication of Mathematics. Outreach is a core part of DAMTP’s mission, and Mathematics outreach has a central role in this, with obvious relevance to widening participation initiatives more widely.

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Council of the School, has agreed that election to the Professorship shall be made by an ad hoc Board of Electors and candidature shall be open to all persons whose work falls within the title of the Professorship.

The Council is submitting a Grace (Grace 4, p. 232) for the establishment of the Professorship.

Establishment of a Professorship of Management Studies

The General Board, on the recommendation of the School of Technology, seeks approval for the establishment of a single tenure Professorship of Management Studies from 1 July 2024 in the Judge Business School. The supporting case for the Professorship was approved by the Chair of the Resource Management Committee by Chair’s action on 13 December 2023.

The full costs of the Professorship will be met from a combination of recurrent Chest income and the trading income available to the Judge Business School. The officeholder will also be appointed as the Dean of the Judge Business School, thereby providing senior and academic leadership to the Judge Business School as Head of Department.

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Council of the School, has agreed that election to the Professorship shall be made by an ad hoc Board of Electors and candidature shall be open to all persons whose work falls within the title of the Professorship.

The Council is submitting a Grace (Grace 5, p. 232) for the establishment of the Professorship.
