University Staff Data

Further to remarks made at the Discussion on the Allocations Report on 11 July 2023 and the Council’s Notice in response, (Reporter, 2022–23: 6709, p. 875 and 6710, p. 882), the following tables of staff data (on p. 33 and p. 34) are published for the information of the University. The data are drawn from the University’s HR System (CHRIS) and staff are classified according to the categories used by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA).

Staff

Staff load is the full-time equivalent (FTE) of the staff headcount. FTE is the proportion of a full-time post being undertaken by a member of staff during the course of the academic year. A full-time member of staff will have an FTE of 1. Staff working part-time will have an FTE that is a proportion of full-time; for example, an employee contracted to work half-time during the whole academic year will have an FTE of 0.5.

The categories by which the FTE is presented show the employment function for the contract at the return date or the end date of the contract if earlier. The employment function relates to the contract of employment and not to the actual work undertaken. The categories are defined by HESA1 as follows:

Academic contract that is teaching only – applies only to contracts indicating that staff are teaching only.

Academic contract that is research only – should be used for those contracts where the primary academic employment function is research only, even though the contract may include a limited number of hours teaching (up to six hours per week or pro-rata for part-time staff).

Academic contract that is both teaching and research – applies to contracts that include six or more hours of teaching per week (averaged over the number of actual teaching weeks) as a minimum (pro-rata for part-time staff) and the remaining contract hours as research only.

Academic contract that is neither teaching nor research – should be used for academic contracts where the primary employment function is not teaching and/or research.

Not an academic contract – mainly professional services.

The Staff load (FTE) data below are a reflection of a census date of the 31 July of each respective year.
