Graces

Graces submitted to the Regent House on 21 July 2010

The Council submits the following Graces to the Regent House. These Graces, other than any which is withdrawn or for which a ballot is requested in accordance with the regulations for Graces of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 107), will be deemed to have been approved at 4 p.m. on Friday, 30 July 2010.

1. That, with effect from 1 October 2010, the regulations for the Board of Graduate Studies (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 124) be amended as follows:1

Regulation 2.

By amending clause (f) so as to read:

(f)to receive the reports, recommendations or resolutions of the Degree Committees on the work of candidates for the degrees of D.D., LL.D., Sc.D., Litt.D., Mus.D., Ph.D., Eng.D., M.Sc., M.Litt., M.Phil., M.St., and Vet.M.D. who have been recommended by the Degree Committee concerned, and to publish the names of those candidates on whom, in the opinion of the Board or of the Degree Committee concerned, the degrees should be conferred;

2. That, with effect from 1 October 2010, the general regulations for the degree of Master of Philosophy (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 495) be amended as follows:1

Regulation 2.

By amending the third sentence of the regulation so as to read:

The examination shall be held before the end of the course, except as provided under Regulation 7, and at such time or times as may be determined by the Degree Committee concerned, subject in the case of written papers to the approval of the Board of Examinations.

Regulation 7.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

7. Each candidate who is required to submit a thesis under the special regulations for the subject concerned shall submit two copies of the thesis in accordance with detailed arrangements approved by the Board, so as to arrive by a date which shall be determined by the Degree Committee, and which shall, for Route A, be not later than the last day of August in the academical year of the course and, for Routes B and C, the last day of August in the second academical year of the course, provided that a candidate may be permitted to submit her or his thesis at such later date as may be determined by the Degree Committee.

Regulation 8.

By amending the penultimate sentence of the regulation so as to read:

In special circumstances the Degree Committee concerned may allow a candidate to submit only one copy of the thesis.

Regulation 10(c).

By amending sub-paragraph (c) of the regulation so as to read:

(c)Where the scheme of examination includes or comprises of a thesis, each candidate’s thesis shall be referred to two Examiners each of whom shall make an independent report thereon. The special regulations for the examination may provide for an oral examination on the thesis and, if so specified, on the other parts of the examination. When the oral examination relates to the thesis both Examiners of the thesis shall be among the Examiners present at the oral examination. The Degree Committee in exceptional circumstances may permit the Examiners to conduct the oral examination by video-conference or other remote means. The Examiners participating in the oral examination shall sign a joint certificate of the result, including any marks assigned thereto, of that examination. If the Examiners do not agree in their recommendation, or if for any other reason the Degree Committee need a further opinion or opinions on the merit of the work submitted, the Degree Committee may appoint additional Examiners, provided that not more than one additional Examiner may be appointed without the leave of the Board of Graduate Studies. Each additional Examiner so appointed shall make an independent report to the Degree Committee.

Regulation 11.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

11. If the Degree Committee, at a meeting held to consider the reports of the Examiners, approve the candidate’s performance as of the requisite standard for the M.Phil. Degree and are of the opinion that the degree should be conferred, the Degree Committee shall communicate their resolution to the candidate and to the Secretary of the Board of Graduate Studies who shall publish a notice of the candidate’s approval for the award of the degree of Master of Philosophy, specifying the subject of the examination and the route of candidature.

Regulations 12–16.

By deleting Regulation 12, renumbering Regulations 15 and 16 as 13 and 14, and re-numbering and amending current Regulations 13 and 14 as Regulation 12 so as to read:

12. (previously 13 and 14). If the Degree Committee, after consideration of a candidate’s marks and the reports of the Examiners in the prescribed examination, are of the opinion that the candidate’s work is not of the requisite standard for the degree, the Degree Committee shall communicate their resolution to the candidate and to the Secretary of the Board of Graduate Studies. After such a resolution has been made the student concerned shall not be eligible to take the examination for the degree again.

3. That, with effect from 1 October 2010, the general regulations for the degree of Master of Research (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 532) be amended as follows:1

Regulation 2.

By amending the third sentence of the regulation so as to read:

The examination for the Degree shall be held before the end of the course, except as provided under Regulation 7, and at such time or times as may be determined by the Degree Committee concerned, subject in the case of written papers to the approval of the Board of Examinations.

Regulation 7.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

7. Each candidate shall submit two copies of the thesis in accordance with detailed arrangements approved by the Board, so as to arrive by a date which shall be determined by the Degree Committee, and which shall not be later than the last day of August in the academical year of the course, provided that a candidate may be permitted to submit his or her thesis at such later date as may be determined by the Degree Committee. The Examiners and the Degree Committee may take into consideration any work published by the candidate which is submitted with the thesis.

Regulation 10(b).

Regulation 11.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

If the Degree Committee at a meeting held to consider the reports of the Examiners, approve the candidate’s marks in the written papers or other exercises, the thesis submitted, and her or his performance in the oral examination (where held) as of the requisite standard for the M.Res. Degree and are of the opinion that the degree should be conferred, the Degree Committee shall communicate their resolution to the candidate and to the Secretary of the Board of Graduate Studies who shall publish a notice of the candidate’s approval for the award of the degree of Master of Research.

Regulation 12.

By deleting this regulation and renumbering subsequent regulations accordingly.

Regulation 13 (renumbered as 12).

By amending the regulation so as to read:

12. If the Degree Committee, after consideration of a candidate’s marks and the reports of the Examiners in the prescribed examination, are of the opinion that the candidate’s work is not of the requisite standard for the degree, the Degree Committee shall communicate their resolution to the candidate and to the Secretary of the Board of Graduate Studies. 4. That, with effect from 1 October 2010, the general regulations for the degree of Master of Studies (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 536) be amended as follows:1

Regulation 13.

By amending the third sentence of the regulation so as to read:

If the Examiners do not agree in their recommendations, or if for any other reason the Degree Committee need a further opinion on the merit of a candidate’s thesis, the Degree Committee may appoint additional Examiners, provided that not more than one additional Examiner shall be appointed without the leave of the Board of Graduate Studies.

Regulation 14.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

14. If the Degree Committee, at a meeting held to consider the reports of the Examiners, approve the candidate’s performance as of the requisite standard for the M.St. Degree and are of the opinion that the degree should be conferred, the Degree Committee shall communicate their resolution to the candidate, to the Strategic Committee of the Institute and to the Secretary of the Board of Graduate Studies who shall publish a notice of the candidate’s approval for the award of the degree of Master of Studies.

Regulation 15.

By deleting this regulation and renumbering subsequent regulations accordingly.

Regulation 16 (renumbered 15).

By amending the regulation so as to read:

15. If the Degree Committee, after consideration of a candidate’s marks and the reports of the Examiners in the prescribed examination, are of the opinion that the candidate’s work is not of the requisite standard for the degree, the Degree Committee shall communicate their resolution to the candidate and to the Secretary of the Board of Graduate Studies and to the Strategic Committee of the Institute of Continuing Education. After such a resolution has been passed, the student shall not be eligible to take the examination for the degree again.

5. That, on the recommendation of the General Board, the Sir Thomas Adams’s Professorship of Arabic be discontinued until 1 October 2013 or until such earlier date as the Board shall determine after consultation with the Council of the School of Arts and Humanities and the Faculty Board of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies.2

6. That the recommendations in paragraph 6 of the Report of the Council, dated 31 May 2010, on the appointment of the University as sole Trustee of Strangeways Research Laboratory (Reporter, 2009–10, p. 938) be approved.

7. That the recommendations in paragraph 11 of the Report of the Council, dated 31 May 2010, on the gallery refurbishment and new entrance for the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (Reporter, 2009–10, p. 942) be approved.

8. That the recommendations in paragraph 6 of the Report of the General Board, dated 2 June 2010, on the establishment of a Laing O’Rourke Professorship of Construction Engineering (Reporter, 2009–10, p. 965) be approved.

9. That the recommendations in paragraph 3 of the Report of the General Board, dated 2 June 2010, on the establishment of a Professorship of Medicine (Reporter, 2009–10, p. 966) be approved.

10. That the recommendations in paragraph 10 of the Report of the Council, dated 14 June 2010, on a technical review of the Statutes, and Ordinances (simplification and clarification) (Reporter, 2009–10, p. 992) be approved.3

11. That the recommendations in paragraph 3 of the Report of the General Board, dated 11 June 2010, on the establishment of a Professorship of Cellular Pathophysiology and Clinical Biochemistry (Reporter, 2009–10, p. 999) be approved.

12. That the recommendations in paragraph 6 of the Report of the General Board, dated 11 June 2010, on the establishment of a Professorship of Orthopaedic Surgery (Reporter, 2009–10, p. 999) be approved.

13. That the recommendations in paragraph 6 of the Report of the General Board, dated 11 June 2010, on the establishment of a Professorship of Stem Cell Medicine (Reporter, 2009–10, p. 1000) be approved.

14. That the regulations for the Weizmann Institute Exchange Fellowships Fund be rescinded.4

15. That the regulations for entries and lists of candidates for examinations (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 231) be amended as follows:

Regulation 12.

By attaching a footnote to the Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Tripos and the Oriental Studies Tripos so as to read:

Except for the oral examinations in Arabic, Hebrew, and Persian for which the procedure shall be as specified in Regulation 13.

Regulation 13.

By inserting the oral examinations in Arabic, Hebrew, and Persian for Part II of the Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Tripos and Part II of the Oriental Studies Tripos in the list of examinations.

16. That the regulations for dates of examinations and publication of class-lists (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 233) be amended by replacing the footnotes against the Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Tripos, and Oriental Studies Tripos in Regulation 2 so as to read:

Except for the following oral examinations:

(i)for Part II in Arabic, Hebrew, and Persian, which shall be held not earlier than the eighth day before the first day of Full Michaelmas Term;

(ii)Part II in all other languages, which shall be held not earlier than the third Monday of Full Easter Term;

(iii)for Part Ia and Ib of the Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Tripos, which shall be held not earlier than the third Monday of Full Easter Term.
