Sónia Alves is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research, Department of Land Economy, University of Cambridge. She is also a Visiting Researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon, and the Danish Building Research Institute, Aalborg University
Much attention has been devoted to how ideational and ideological paradigm shifts in the field of housing and land-use planning have been adopted in a context of changes in finance and governance. In diverse political contexts, the reduction of direct provision by public providers has led to the creation of new kinds of ‘affordable products’ that are typically tailored to middle-income households but do not match low-income needs.
What is the relevance of requiring on-site affordable housing provision as part of general market developments and as a condition of planning approval? Which planning tools have been used to secure the provision of affordable housing? What has been accomplished so far?
This talk presents some of the findings of the project PLANning for AFFordable HOusing (PLANAFFHO), which is funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme, and compares three capital cities: London, Copenhagen, and Lisbon
