Churchill, Empire and Race: Opening the Conversation

An online discussion between Professor Priya Gopal of Churchill College and Professor Richard Toye of the University of Exeter.

Professor Priya Gopal holds a Chair in the Faculty of English at the University of Cambridge and is a Fellow of Churchill College. Her primary interests are in colonial and postcolonial studies. Published work includes 'Literary Radicalism in India: Gender, Nation and the Transition to Independence' (Routledge, 2005), 'After Iraq: Reframing Postcolonial Studies' (Special issue of New Formations co-edited with Neil Lazarus), 'The Indian English Novel: Nation, History and Narration' (Oxford University Press, 2009) and, most recently, 'Insurgent Empire: Anticolonial Resistance and British Dissent' (Verso, 2020).

Professor Richard Toye holds a chair at the University of Exeter and is an historian of Britain in its global and imperial context in the period from the late Nineteenth Century to the present day. He is particularly interested in the rhetorical dimensions of politics, economics and empire. He is the author of several books on Winston Churchill as well as a number of other works. His most recent books are 'Winston Churchill: A Life in the News' (OUP, 2020) and 'The Churchill Myths', edited with Steven Fielding and Bill Schwarz (OUP, 2020).
