Disease Detectives: The case of the almost indestructible superbug
Thu 21 November 2019
Cambridge Science Centre
To mark World Antibiotic Awareness Week, find out first-hand how scientists tackle outbreaks of drug-resistant diseases. Scientists from the Centre for Genomic Pathogen Surveillance will be at your side to guide you and show you the real techniques they use to prevent outbreaks from spreading.
You’ll have a 5 minute briefing and then move around lab and computer stations to tackle three tasks: you’ll be identifying the bacterial strain in the lab to find out whether it’s resistant to an antibiotic or not, and then use different computer programmes to learn more about its behaviour, and whether it’s been found anywhere else in the country or worldwide. Then you can decide what action to take to stop is getting out of control!
Each session lasts 30 minutes. Please book your slot when you register for tickets.
No previous experience needed, this event is open to all that are curious.
