ONLINE COURSE Who was that plant? Part one: The cultivars

Mon 17 January 2022

online

Names of people and places abound in our garden plants, some from the distant past, some modern, but all with fascinating histories to tell about the plants we love. Cultivars can be named by plant hunters or nurseries, growers and breeders, they reflect their loves and obsessions, or their inspirations. Some seem at odds with the plant they name, others pick up on scent or colour or maybe a memory of a friend or fictional character to be honoured or even contemporary character long since forgotten otherwise. This session will explore some of the people that have given their names to cultivars or varieties. Ballerinas and queens, workhouse wives, nurserymen and poets, their stories will enliven your beds and borders and bring new dimensions to the art of garden creation.
