Glanville Lecture 2019 - Koen Donker van Heel: Papyrus BM EA 87512 - Always Look on the Bright Side of Wife?

Fri 8 February 2019

Mill Lane Lecture Rooms

The annual Glanville Lecture for 2019 will be given by Dr Koen Donker van Heel.
The lecture will be followed by a reception in Grove Lodge (part of the Fitzwilliam Museum).

Papyrus EA 87512, from the 7th century BC, newly acquired by the British Museum presents us with a great number of difficulties. First: it is written in abnormal hieratic, a dreadful shorthand. Second: there are many women in it who are clearly acting in some professional capacity. But why? And where does this papyrus come from?
