ONLINE & GARDEN TWO PART COURSE Introduction to soils: formation, texture, structure and assessment

Sat 9 October 2021 - Sun 10 October 2021

online

Part 1
Location: online
Date: Saturday 09/10/21
Time: 10am-1pm

The first online session introduces learners to soil formation and how to cultivate soil to promote its health. Learners will gain an understanding of the science of soils and the variety of life within it. Most importantly you will learn that soil is the foundation of all successful growing and that how we assess, cultivate and care for our soil ensures a healthy and productive garden.

Please note Part 1 is an online course using ZOOM. No specialist software is required to participate, but a device with a microphone and webcam will be needed.
This is a live interactive course, and will not be made available as a recording to watch at a later date.

Part 2
Location: Botanic Garden
Date: Sunday 10/10/21
Time: 10am-2pm

The second session takes place in the Garden and learners will gain the practical skills needed to assess soil for pH, structure, nutrient value and organic matter content as well as drainage. Learners can bring a sample of the soil from their own garden to test. There will be a tour of the Garden focusing on the Old and New Pinetum, and learners will gain the skills to identify a range of conifers.

The practical Sunday sessions will take place entirely outdoors so participants will need to come dressed for all weathers.

Sandie Cain joined the Garden team in 2018 as Horticultural Learning Co-ordinator with responsibility for the Schools Garden and horticultural learning. She studied horticulture at Plumpton College and Bicton College, and was previously head gardener of a Victorian walled garden producing vegetables, fruit, micro herbs and edible flowers for a Michelin Star restaurant. Sandie is passionate about horticulture with a special interest in kitchen gardens.
