Performance: ‘Imploded, burnt, turned to ash’ by Issam Kourbaj
Mon 15 March 2021
Kettle's Yard House and Gallery
Join Kettle’s Yard, The Heong Gallery and The Fitzwilliam Museum for a live streamed drawing and sound performance by Syrian-born and Cambridge-based artist Issam Kourbaj, marking the tenth anniversary of the Syrian uprising – a crisis that resulted in violent armed conflict and ongoing civil war. This is a collaboration with composer Richard Causton and soprano Jessica Summers.
FREE to attend, you can watch the performance at www.kettlesyard.co.uk/issam-kourbaj-performance.
The performance will begin with Kourbaj drawing fragments of Arabic words and eye idols on a large surface in layers, repeating and obscuring them. The words are inspired by the teenage graffiti that sparked the Syrian uprising in March 2011, and the eye idols are based on three Syrian eye idols from The Fitzwilliam Museum’s collection.
The final drawing will then be burnt, with the ash being placed in a glass box as a memorial to victims of the ongoing crisis.
