Steve Bingham's Ad Hoc Strings

Sun 9 February 2020

West Road Concert Hall

Shostakovich Chamber Symphony op. 110a
Shostakovich Piano Concerto no. 1 op. 35
Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings op. 48
Tchaikovsky Francesca da Rimini

Piano Jill Morton
Trumpet Paul Mayes
Conductor Steve Bingham

For his new “Ad Hoc” project, Steve Bingham has invited two outstanding soloists. Pianist Jill Morton is a highly successful chamber musician and soloist who has performed throughout Britain and across Europe. Virtuoso trumpeter Paul Mayes is one of Britain’s most exciting and versatile players.

The programme presents an exquisite selection music for chamber orchestra: Rudolf Barshai’s arrangement of Shostakovich’s Eighth String Quartet for string orchestra, and Shostakovich’s spectacular and highly entertaining concerto for piano and trumpet. Tchaikovsky’s Serenade op. 48, with its classical proportions and unclassical zest, summarises an evening that showcases the wide range of colours of the stringed chamber orchestra.

Cost: £20 (£17 Concession), £17 (£14 Concession), £12 (£10 Concession)
