Reuse, appropriation and ownership: framing our understanding

Thu 7 February 2019 - Fri 8 February 2019

McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research

The two-day colloquium, organised by the Fitzwilliam Museum, will examine ancient Egyptian concepts of reuse, appropriation of property and ownership. This has emerged from examining data such as CT scanning and X radiography of the Museum’s coffin collection. The colloquium will extend discussion to the wider reuse of Egyptian material culture, including coffins, statues, funerary goods and even complete tombs, in order to seek to frame a series of questions about how appropriation and ownership were viewed within that culture.
