Chromosomes: more than just DNA!
Almost every cell in your body contains 2 meters of DNA. How is this possible when most cells are far too small for us to see with the naked eye? This precious information fits into our tiny cells because it is wrapped tightly around spool-like proteins, forming structures called chromosomes.
In order to stay healthy, our cells must constantly divide, keeping their DNA intact with each division. Chromosomes help keep DNA safe during division, but mistakes still happen from time to time.
The molecular structure of chromosomes is essential to our well-being; the way the DNA winds around the spool-like proteins can control which genes are expressed and when. This epigenetic mechanism (of winding and un-winding) has been associated with blood diseases, inflammation, and other autoimmune diseases when it doesn’t operate properly.
