The Betty Behrens Seminar on Classics of Historiography

Paul Seaward on "The History of the Rebellion" by Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon

Why Theology Needs Science – and Why Science Needs Theology

Tue 7 March 2023

Healey Room, Westminster College

On 7th March at 1pm Dr Lydia Jaeger will give a seminar entitled ‘Why Theology Needs Science – and Why Science Needs Theology’

Lunch will be provided from 12:30 in the Healey Room, Westminster College, Cambridge.

Abstract
In contrast to common practice, which separates science and theology, this talk maps out possible fruitful interactions between science and theology. In particular, it asks how theologians and faith communities (in particular the Christian churches) can benefit from science – and what scientists can learn from theology for their professional work. Such an integrated view enables believers to adopt a positive stance towards scientific progress.

Against the mainstream, I will also argue that there is room to consciously take advantage of theological resources in scientific practice. Although this seminar mainly uses creation as the lens through which to address these questions, it also hints at contributions which the concept of sin offers.
