Cambridge Physics Centre presents: Crossrail and other large tunnels by Prof Lord Robert Mair
Thu 28 February 2019
Cavendish Laboratory
How do you build a railway tunnel under the heart of a huge city without disturbing the buildings above? How do you make sure the tunnel is stable when trains run through it night and day? What problems arise when the tunnel is dug into ground above which humans have lived for several thousand years? Prof. Lord Robert Mair is well qualified to answer these questions and many more besides. He has been a member of the Engineering Expert Panel for London’s Crossrail, currently Europe’s largest construction project, and has consulted on railway tunnels throughout Europe and Asia.
