Thu 30 January 2020
Cambridge University Library
This film records the 50th anniversary celebration of women’s admission to the University of Cambridge, when in 1998 more than 800 women who matriculated before 1948 returned to Senate House to collect their degrees retrospectively. The 1-hour documentary will be followed by a Q&A with director, Lucy Thane.
In 1998, the University of Cambridge marked the 50th anniversary of women’s admission to the University by inviting those women who had passed the tripos before 1948 to come and take their degrees in retrospect. More than 800 women, almost all over the age of 70, responded.
The 1-hour documentary As Is Your Due records the impressions and recollections of those attending that gala weekend, at Girton and Newnham Colleges, as well as the processions and ceremonies in Senate House. Moving and uplifting, the film reminds viewers of the 70-year struggle to achieve bare legal equality in the institution. The screening will be introduced by the Newnham host of the event, Professor Jane Humphries, and followed by Q&A with the film-maker, Lucy Thane.
Suitable for ages 14+.
