Ripples from the Dark Side of the Universe with Prof Jim Hough, University of Glasgow
Tue 9 February 2021
https://outreach.phy.cam.ac.uk/programme/cpc
This talk will review progress in the field of gravitational wave detection from the first days of aluminium bar detectors to the present time where the laser interferometer detectors, Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo, have allowed gravitational waves to be detected, and are opening up a new field of gravitational multi-messenger astrophysics. Many experimental challenges had to be overcome and new challenges are presenting themselves as we look to further enhance the performance of ground-based detectors and to increase sensitivity to lower frequency waves with the space-based detector LISA. The most recent discoveries by the collaboration will be discussed.
This sixth form physics lecture has 2 parts: at 1600, an Isaac Physics problem solving session takes viewers through problems loosely related to the lecture subject, the the lecture itself will run from 1700 to 1800.
