Writing for The Conversation
Fri 22 February 2019
Alison Richard Building
This free workshop is intended for postdoctoral researchers in the humanities and social sciences at the University of Cambridge.
Are you interested in communicating your research to the public? How is communicating with the general public different from writing for an academic audience? What makes a good news story?
The Conversation is an independent news site whose content is sourced from the academic and research community. Their editors work with researchers – including many from Cambridge – to unlock their knowledge for use by the wider public.
In this session led by Associate Editor Jonathan Este, you will learn how to communicate your research beyond academia. You will learn how to consider what elements of research and expertise could interest the public, how to communicate it, and understand the style, tone and structure of articles written for the public. You will also write and hone your own story pitch. There will be plenty of time for questions as well.
• Jonathan Este is The Conversation's Arts & Culture Editor. He spent 20 years as a reporter, columnist and editor on The Independent as well as The Australian. He joins The Conversation from the Media Alliance in Australia where he specialised in media law and policy and the digital revolution in journalism.
