The Old Library, First Court, Magdalene College
Distinct from the Samuel Pepys Library, which is also at Magdalene, the Old Library has housed the historic books of the College in First Court since the fifteenth century, in what was the medieval Prior's residence.
As well as enjoying the historic, book-lined rooms, Visitors will see displays of items from the College's special collectons and archives, which are not normally seen in public.
The themes for the Spring openings are:
7th February 2019: Student life before the Second World War. Glimpse life as an undergraduate at Magdalene College over the centuries through a display of materials from the Archive.
7th March 2019: Bookbindings. The Library offers a magnificent and varied collection of bindings, from gold-tooled leather to twentieth-century dust jackets.
4th April 2019: Manuscripts. From beautifully-decorated medieval devotional texts to fascinating modern autograph manuscripts and calligraphy, the display will sample just some of the College's broad collection of handwritten materials.
2nd May 2019: Rudyard Kipling. Learn about Rudyard Kipling, Honorary Fellow of the College, from the materials in the Archive, the Kipling Collection and the Modern Manuscript Collection.
