Natural or artificial intelligence? Measures, maps and taxonomies

Tue 12 March 2019

Mill Lane Lecture Rooms

Presented with Cambridge University Press

Artificial intelligence is taking off while we still know very little about intelligence, and cognition as a whole. Professor Jose Hernandez-Orallo argues that we urgently need measures to compare natural and artificial intelligence, maps to locate their future trajectories in the cognitive landscape, and behavioural taxonomies to understand a new diversity of artefacts and interactions. He will present these three challenges as great scientific opportunities, a new age of discovery awaiting metrologists, cartographers and taxonomists.

Jose Hernandez-Orallo is professor at Technical University of Valencia and associate fellow at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence, Cambridge. Two decades ago, he called for moving beyond the Turing test and IQ tests for evaluating AI, and has been looking for less anthropocentric alternatives since then. His most recent book, "The Measure of All Minds", Prose Award 2018, addresses an integrated view of the evaluation of natural and artificial intelligence (Cambridge University Press).
