Graces

Graces submitted to the Regent House on 29 April 2026

The Council submits the following Graces to the Regent House. These Graces, unless they are withdrawn or a ballot is requested in accordance with the regulations for Graces of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, 2024, p. 111), will be deemed to have been approved at 4 p.m. on Friday, 8 May 2026. Further information on requests for a ballot or the amendment of Graces is available to members of the Regent House on the Regent House Petitions site.§

1. That a Janina Phillips Fund be established in the University, to be governed by the following regulations:1

Janina Phillips Fund

1. The bequest received from Janina Phillips, together with such other sums as may be received or applied for the same purpose, shall form an endowment fund called the Janina Phillips Fund for the benefit of the School of the Biological Sciences with a preference for advancing research by supporting postdoctoral research associates and studentships in the field of infectious diseases and in those fields intersecting with climate change.

2. The Managers shall be responsible for the administration of the Fund and the application of its income and shall comprise the Head of the School of the Biological Sciences, who shall be Chair, the Head of the Department of Pathology, and a person appointed by the Council of the School of the Biological Sciences from the Department of Genetics for such period as the Council of the School shall determine.[1]

3. Subject to Regulation 4, the income of the Fund shall and (if the Managers think fit) the capital of the Fund may be applied towards the payment of the stipend, national insurance, pension contributions, and associated indirect costs of postdoctoral research associate posts payable by the University and/or used to provide Studentships as the Managers shall determine. Arrangements for the Studentships, including the number, tenure and conditions of the Studentships to be awarded in any given year, the expenses to be covered by a Studentship, and the form of the application and selection processes, shall be at the discretion of the Managers and may provide for applications by persons who are not yet members of the University and for the financial circumstances of candidates to be taken into consideration.

4. Any unexpended income in any financial year, including income accrued during a vacancy in the post(s), and/or including any years in which the Studentships are not awarded, may, at the discretion of the Managers:

(a)be awarded to support the work of the postholder(s) and/or the holder(s) of the Studentships;

(b)with the approval of the Council of the School of the Biological Sciences, be applied to support research in the intersection of infectious diseases and climate change in the University in such manner as may be recommended by the Managers;

(c)be carried forward for use as income in accordance with Regulation 3 in any one or more subsequent financial years.

[1] The Council of the School has appointed the Head of the Pathogen Dynamics Group to serve ex officio until further notice.

2. That an Arthur Shercliff Memorial Fund be established in the University, to be governed by the following regulations:1

Arthur Shercliff Memorial Fund

1. The benefaction received from the trustees of the Arthur Shercliff Memorial Fund, together with such other sums as may be received or applied for the same purpose, shall form an endowment fund called the Arthur Shercliff Memorial Fund, to provide prizes and awards to undergraduate registered students in the Department of Engineering.

2. The Managers shall be responsible for the administration of the Fund and the application of its income and shall comprise:

(a)the Head of the Department of Engineering who shall be Chair;

(b)two members of the Faculty of Engineering appointed by the Faculty Board of Engineering, who shall serve for such period as the Faculty Board shall determine.[1]

3. Subject to Regulation 4, the income of the Fund (and, if the Managers think fit, the capital of the Fund) shall be used to provide Engineering Tripos prizes and awards, which shall be called Arthur Shercliff Prizes and Awards. Arrangements for the number and conditions of the prizes and awards, which may recognise achievement in examinations and assessed project work (including associated expenses), shall be at the discretion of the Managers.

4. Any unexpended income in any financial year may, at the discretion of the Managers, be carried forward for use as income in accordance with Regulation 3 in any one or more subsequent financial years.

5. If the Managers at any time decide that it is expedient to discontinue the Fund, any funds remaining shall be used for the benefit of students in the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, in any manner which is exclusively charitable at law.

[1] The Faculty Board of Engineering has agreed that Dr Hugh Shercliff, a retired member of the Faculty of Engineering, shall be a Manager of the Fund until further notice.

The Council has sanctioned the submission of the following Graces to the Regent House at a Congregation to be held on 2 May 2026.

That the following persons be admitted to the degree of Master of Arts under the provisions of Statute B II 2:

1. Carol Ann Armitage, Fellow of Selwyn College.

2. Joanne Michelle McPeake, Fellow of Homerton College, Clinical Professor of Nursing in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care.

3. Benjamin Robert Sheen, Fellow of Jesus College.

4. Rachel Jean Sippy, Fellow of Clare Hall.
